Neat halogen desoldering technique.

This is a neat technique for desoldering using a focused beam of IR from a common car halogen lamp.  How long before it's sold as a commercial product.

Neat idea. There's also the clothes iron as preheater..... Don't forget that halogen bulbs produce UV light as well..... a quick glance at wikipedia leads me to believe that headlight bulbs use a UV-blocking glass (makes sense, as the lens assembly isn't glass) - but I suggest doing your own research before trying! E.g., my halogen work lights have an extra layer of glass between you and the bulb. IIRC it's there both for keeping the heat a bit less accessible and for UV blocking.

Ooh, that's a bright :) solution

Could possibly use as a hand held reflow took too in case of intermittent issues.

Uh. There's something you should know about Clive.

Neat - I wish I knew this before I went out an brought an IR rework station

At :35 seconds she says it is "the product of her fantasies". Might make for an interesting girlfriend, that one.

It already is a product. <a href="https://www.aliexpress.com/item/PUHUI-T-862-T862-3IN1-Digital-Infrared-Rework-Reflow-Soldering-Station-Use-for-Welding-on-Mobile/32275331214.html?spm=2114.search0104.3.17.nDEapS&amp;ws_ab_test=searchweb0_0,searchweb201602_1_10152_10065_10151_10068_10344_10345_10342_10547_10343_10340_10341_10548_10193_10194_10609_5000011_10541_10304_10307_10610_5080011_10302_10059_10534_100031_10103_5060011_10142_10107_5130011_10320_10321_51102_10322_10084_10083_10180_10312_10313_10184_10314_10319_10604_10603_10605_10186_10594,searchweb201603_25,ppcSwitch_5&amp;algo_expid=8f45b0da-22bd-4586-a090-2a3fa2faf926-2&amp;algo_pvid=8f45b0da-22bd-4586-a090-2a3fa2faf926&amp;rmStoreLevelAB=0" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.aliexpress.com/item/PUHUI-T-862-T862-3IN1-Digital-Infrared-Rework-Reflow-Soldering-Station-Use-for-Welding-on-Mobile/32275331214.html?spm=2114.search0104.3.17.nDEapS&amp;ws_ab_test=searchweb0_0,searchweb201602_1_10152_10065_10151_10068_10344_10345_10342_10547_10343_10340_10341_10548_10193_10194_10609_5000011_10541_10304_10307_10610_5080011_10302_10059_10534_100031_10103_5060011_10142_10107_5130011_10320_10321_51102_10322_10084_10083_10180_10312_10313_10184_10314_10319_10604_10603_10605_10186_10594,searchweb201603_25,ppcSwitch_5&amp;algo_expid=8f45b0da-22bd-4586-a090-2a3fa2faf926-2&amp;algo_pvid=8f45b0da-22bd-4586-a090-2a3fa2faf926&amp;rmStoreLevelAB=0</a> These things work with a standard halogen reflector lamp

Sebastian Rietig

Right. Is it also re-flowing all the components around the target? Not that I have a better idea.

Robert Sanges

It looks like a great idea. I imagine it would be good for other things too, such as shrinking heat-shrink sleeving. Has anyone actually tried it yet though? How easy is it to handle the hot bulb, and how likely is it to damage other components?

Gary Bleads

I was quite confused that it wasn't Clive doing the voice over but it seems like a pretty neat trick!

blakethepatton

That is actually a very neat trick! Never would have thought of it. I will try it some time.

That's a really good tip! I made one of those eBay led clock kits, but have a bad joint somewhere and I've struggled to desolderd the chip pins. I'm gonna see if this will help. Cheers!!
