Revisiting dancing flame LED candles.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vpK9beBN98s

It's a while since I had a look at a dancing flame style candle. These effects use a pulsed magnetic field to deflect a plastic flame in front of a focused LED to create a surprisingly realistic flame effect.

This is a recently purchased Premier one, and for the cost (about £3) it's a very good unit. One notable feature is that it draws about 20mA with a fresh set of alkaline cells, and considerably less as the voltage falls. It will happily run on a set of rechargeable NiMh AAA cells for a very long time.

At this price it's worth buying just for the internal module.

For what it's worth, these are the ones I got. They look pretty much exactly like the cheapest ones in the video, but they came with a little IR remote that lets you turn them on and off from across the room, and they have a timer function to turn them on and off, etc. (Probably why they go through batteries faster, huh?) Still, we've been enjoying them. http://a.co/d1GtchX

Okay - I broke down and bought some of these candles, and they're really nice. They chewed through a set of non-rechargeable AAA cells in about a week at roughly 3-4 hours a day. So now I'm looking at NMh batteries and chargers. Anyone have any experience with this setup? http://a.co/aRVuP7M

Yeah, the price varies dramatically. A local garden place was selling them at a high price too.

I saw one of the Premier candles today at a garden centre I'd been dragged to by my other half. They wanted £12 for it!

The coil is probably made from self-bonding magnet wire. Enamelled wire with a special overcoat, which adds bonding capability. It's activated by heat or solvents.

You should definitly try isopropyl on hotglue, sooo many people don't know that trick and it works brilliantly :)

Manchester (insert locale of your choice) spanner = hammer. If brute force and ignorance doesn't work..... get a bigger hammer.

Me too and I suspect we weren't the only ones.

My father, a telephone engineer, was using brute force and ignorance in the '70s (and probably earlier) so I suspect it's a fairly common term or at least used to be. I get a warm, fuzzy reminder of my youth when Clive says it but then Clive always gives me a warm fuzzy feeling. ☺

Just shows how off I was. I though the one on the right looked the most expensive! Haha.

"Brute force and Ignorance" I dub thee a "Big Cliveism" Right up there with the "slip joint pliers of scientific inquiry" Happy New Year, everybody! I'm off to do the "all 4 games hack" on a Tiny Arcade Space Invaders! Woo hoo!
