Inside the world's smallest smoke detector.

This is quite a neat little thing.  It's a very compact smoke detector based on a stack of the sounder, smoke detecting cavity, PCB and battery.

We have a heat detector in our kitchen for that reason. Not sure if it's as quick to detect a fire though.

I have some here in NZ, they apparently have a 10 year life and use CR123a batteries instead of the CR2's.

Interesting things observed from the video: 1. it's not a CoB situation, but they're sort of just potting over some SMT chips for corrosion resistance. 2. what Clive identifies as an inductor, they label as a capacitor.

I was just wondering if you have ever tried to dissolve the black blobs in a CoB situation with some sort of solvent, to reveal the innards in a less destructive manner than hacking away at it with a screwdriver or chisel?

An "Optical" smoke detector will not sound alarm from making toast. It's the "Ionisation" ones that do.

I’m looking for a small smoke detector to place on the lid of my RC lipo charging kit. Hope this has acceptable performance.

I try to avoid surface mount wherever possible. My preference is for through-hole.

Big Clive

Perfect for RVs or maybe even straight-up camping. Good one. Thanks Clive!

Interesting video Clive. Always wanted to know how they worked. Seeing the surface mounts there have you done a video of soldering them in. Thought I remembered seeing one from you but can't find it - maybe was someone else. Just bought a small Ebay kit and wanted to try them.
