Insider a cheap socket testing plug.

As sockets are daisy chained on the same circuit, you might find other sockets also have the wrong polarity (or not). Correcting the polarity at the washing machine socket could have a knock on effect on the other sockets, so be sure to test all the sockets before and after any electrical work. If all the sockets on the circuit have the wrong polarity you will need to check the polarity at the fusebox too.

Bought a socketandsee 22 off Amazon prime based on this. Discovered my washing machine is plugged into a socket with live and neutral reversed. Moved to a different socket while I investigate

Demolished Man

I have the same SocketandSee tester shown in the video. It's a really good unit.

I prefer the ones that light 3 leds when all is ok. I find the ones with 2 leds confusing, and there is no way to test the 3rd led, as it only lights on a fault.

I also have an old neon based one, I would like to know how it works as it only contains resistors. Recently I bought one similar to Clive’s but without the lcd. It behaved sporadically so was returned to Toolstation and replaced with the equivalent Kewtech SocketandSee.

Interesting variation on a theme, I have a neon based one that I've had for over 20 years that still does the job for me. Just need a way to simply prove that both legs of a ring main are contiguous!
