Smashing and fixing the LED star lamp.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HNaU76L296Q

This is a long and enjoyable video, so grab a drink and kick back.  It involves unreasonable force with lots of broken glass, and a super simple new power supply for the little LED panel.  There's also a mini rant about Carillion construction's health and safety aggressors.  They're a big corrupt finger-in-every-pie government-buddy type company in the UK who have just gone bust.  They're most notable for de-skilling, exploitation, nonsensical blanket safety rules and running schools for profit at the expense of the kids education.

I also discovered that you can turn some lamps into strobes deliberately with just a single resistor.  And I drank some blue collar trash champagne too.  (White wine carbonated in a SodaStream.)

It was a good night.

More "Tiddly Teardowns" please. We know you're careful enough not to zap yourself.

Yes, my unit is a Cliff one.

Big Clive

Clive, are the 'QuickTest' boxes made by CLIFF in UK? I'm trying to find one for personal/hobby work and those are the ones I've found. TIA!

Another great video, I too am curious to see the Phosphorus star under UV

Richard Boyce

Thanks for a great video

I’m curious to see the phosphorus star under UV light.

They sell the genuine Quicktest and what appears to be a clone. I was toying with buying the clone to take a look at.

Big Clive

I've just checked and the neon draws 1.7mA, so yes it was a factor.

Big Clive

Since it has only a resistor and a neon. I will say very very little.

Charles Bruckner

That is very nice! I have to agree that it looks better (at least on camera) without the phosphor layer. Bummer the voltage is so high because it does look like the kind of a thing one would like to build into other things.

Michael Thompson

I've bought one of the quicktests from CPC, but I didn't realize they were clones. If you think it would be useful for a comparison between the two I can disassemble mine and take pictures/make a video of the internals.

Remember the plastic birdcage lamps (last year) that had a similar square glass mounting for the LED, I sent a few to Canada for my father and they flashed, I just thought it was the capacitor dropper but I guess you have now explained why. (Yep I know the seller AliExpress said only 220v I just took a chance) AKA -- Korea Solar LED or Green Eye Filament or Filament 12W 120LEDinCOB (the 12w runs at 6w) On a previous visit 2008 I had added to my fathers house a separate UK plug circuit so he could use nearly everything electrical from the UK for the garage and kitchen. The birdcage light worked well on the Canada 2phase supply as you would guess.

Could the Hopi be over-reading because of the neon in the quicktest?

David Glover-Aoki

How much power does the Quicktest use?

NephiAust

realy like the buck converter that fits in a E24 fitting . Im looking for similar for a single 5W LED cob ( 16V +/- 250mA) so if anybody knows where I can source them I'd love to hear from you

And I got a bit trashed my self. on some equality trashy hard lemonade. Now to go to bed.
