First strike.

I guess the militant flaggers must have got bored with Codyslab. This strike is on a very old video where I showed how you could make nicotine (and flavour) free e-liquid with standard food grade glycerin. That's possibly one of the safest e-liquids available. It was made before food grade propylene glycol was easily available.

If I get a few strikes it stops me releasing content and poses a risk of channel deletion. Rest assured that if that happens I'll find an alternative video platform and Patreon supporters will continue to get videos as usual.

First strike.

Comments

The problem you have is Clive in every video where you help people to make their own cheaper alternatives to a very expensive market your gonna be open to strikes people that stand to lose money will always look out for number 1. But I’ll remain a supporter and through every attempt to silence. Thank you for keeping us informed. I Remain.

Newcastlewatson

keep fighting!

Censorship problems suck my friend.

Youtube is so "double-standard".

Alexbleks

I'm monitoring the options. I don't want to put my channel behind a pay wall as I want it to be available to everyone. It's also hard to compete with YouTube's massive video serving system and established adsense advertising facilities. I still regard YouTube as being in its infancy. It's all a learning experience for everyone.

Big Clive

The guys over at LinusTechTips are creating a platform for video to help combat this sort of thing. They're calling it Floatplane but it's a way off completion I think.

PeerTube is an excellent decentralized, non-corporate video hosting application that uses the same underlying federation protocol as Mastodon. I've been working on automatically mirroring youtube videos to my own private instance (legal fair use) and it's quite nice to work with.

George Dorn

Clive, we'd love to have you on Alexandria, the first "media on a blockchain" project ever - we do not believe in censorship, so we built a protocol that will simply not allow it which we'd love to tell you more about - we'll be releasing our new front end soon and you'll be able to monetize directly there, or even on videos you share over social media: https://alexandria.io/browser/b6a8fa

As they say "never underestimate the power of stupidity".. Rest assured, if you move I'll be moving with you and will continue to support you wherever that might be..

Gordo

Assuming this should continue, let me offer up a good alternative that increasing numbers of folks in the states have been moving to: https://d.tube/

youtube taking the stance of Abstinence-only vape education?

This is a group of do gooders, reporting shit they find offensive, you tube can say it's an algorithm all they want that's b.s. its some unknown group reporting videos. Keep up the good work.

Reminds me of the Stun Gun modules from 6 months ago. Got a couple of those, they are great fun.

Some people really need to get themselves a life, maybe a friend or two, perhaps even a relationship might be on the cards if they could only find a way to get out of Mom's basement.

Chris Talbot

Excellent! I guess all the world's REAL problems have been solved if people have time for this nonsense.

B3

They don't even bother to point to exactly what they don't like? Just that its against their rules.. Can somebody explain?

Good grief. Mindless automatons whose power is greater than their knowledge or good sense. Appeal and move on. We’re with you BC.

What a stupid time to be alive. Well, maybe we'll all be watching science and technology videos over on the gun oriented Full30.com because they actually understand that the physical universe is a thing and can't be made to just go away.

Kyle

Yep. Give it some more time and someone will be able to link the video to racism, the #metoo movement, and the disappearance of a species of insect in the mountains of Peru.

Wankers!

Youtube is trying it's hardest to make people find new platforms... Fine, drive us towards the darker corners of the web where people have the freedom to say fuck if they feel like it.

Lovely non-specific complaint/cause, if our legal systems worked like that then random people would be thrown in jail for no good reason whatsoever; "you look like a crook, to jail you go". I do hope you appeal this. I think YouTube owes creators better explanations than non-specific BS when handing out strikes.

Here's hoping the response to your appeal is sane.

Gits!

Phil Collins

So it's a video platform? I've been wondering.

Kadah

Good thing floatplane is looking good so far.

Utterly ridiculous, I hope you've appealed. Considering what can be found on Patreon/YouTube, this doesn't make sense at all. Rest assured though, if you do end up having to move elsewhere, we'll be right behind you. Ne te carborundum illegitimus!

Youtube needs a massive dose of reality. bloody disgusting, there are far more issues deserving of a strike than this. totally ridiculous. Go Clive, we support you!

Richard Boyce

Ah yes the danger that is nicotine free e-liquid. I don't understand how your video gets flagged, when people like the King of Random are posting videos explaining how to make napalm, or flamethrowers. It seems people who make genuinely interesting content like you and Codyslab get the strikes, while YouTube's favourite channels can get away with anything.

YouTube is a terrible platform anyway now

I smell a misbehaving bot. For those who don't know, this stuff doesn't come from people actually having a meeting at YouTube and saying "So, what to do with this video? Has Clive been a naughty boy?". It's a combination of automatic processes and, at least in the first place, possibly a "review" by a human whose job it is to review thousands of these things. It only gets properly looked at if it's appealed.

Mike Knell

So, they allow idiots that encourage eating Tide Pods, but something like this is given a strike? Youtube are hypocrites of the highest order

Float plane is or should be released now. They wont care what you put in. They have set up to compete with youtube directly.

Perhaps there should be an "Emergency Video Channel" channel. This is getting even more absurd every week.

Somewhat related: I think their bot would have had a meltdown if, during the ASSpod video you suggested the possibility of it containing sublingual nitroglycerin tablets!! Not only am I on a daily regimin of 81mg aspirin, but I also take the nitroglycerin tablets every few days for mild angina (I had an acute coronary syndrome event the last week of 2017, otherwise known as a heart attack. Fortunately, alert ER and cardiologist physicians caught it and next day I had a stent installed.) Nitroglycerin. There. I said it again (while being very trusting of Patreon).

Have you already wrote back to Youtube and objected the strike? What you have posted back then was neither illegal nor against any Youtube guidelines I'm aware of. It is perfectly legal to use glycerine for e-liquids - at least as long as you are not going to sell it commercially.

Big Clive have prep’ed an emergency video telling us what to do in case you are barred from uploading new content?

Lostngone

Bot searching for vegetable glycerine (explosives), or nicotine (encouraging smoking)?

Marmite

It is affecting a lot of providers. If you get bumped, we'll follow to wherever you go. I love your content and thousands of others do also. If there is an alternative site we'll follow.

Quite often it might also just be a bot that striked your video by accident. YouTube does have issues with their automated striking System since a few months. And most strikes are automated and not manually done. Appeal it, there is a high chance they will correct this.

Andreas

What Basic bitches

Just submit the Appeal Form, and YouTude will take the strike away..

Dane

I read through the guidelines looking for what that video would have violated. The closest I could think of is if morons imitated it with toxic ingredients. In which case every YouTube make-up tutorial and cooking demonstration is a ticking time bomb. Oh no! I said the B word! My comment will now be demonetized.

Okay. I’m irritated on your behalf. Vaping is neither illegal nor immoral and your video was giving viewers a safe alternative to an addictive substance. “Self Help” is one of the reasons I come to YouTube. It really is the home of the DIY community. When do they draw the line!? Demonetization is one thing but a slap like this is just insulting!

Todd Swain

I don't see how mixing food stuffs is in violation, Are there still videos around on how to ferment and distil alcohol?

chemicalvamp

Man people are such c***s. Do they really have nothing better to do.

Alphabet really are turning into a bunch of clueless idiots (censored version). Their insidious ad tracking has already turned me away from Google as my primary search engine. Their draconian censorship implementation is in danger of killing YouTube - there is a groundswell of creators looking at alternatives as a result of their recent heavy handedness. I can easily search on Google for how to make my own vaping liquid and get pages of results - it's not illegal. (Though why anyone would vape is beyond me - I just see adults who look like they are sucking dummies (u.s. pacifiers) . Ironically though if it wasn't for their censorship, I'd likely never of heard of Cody and become a subscriber.

Kevin Leah (AKA Zoinks!)

Where the hell was the content "that encourages illegal activities or incites users to violate YouTube's guidelines"? All I saw was you showing how to make nicotine free vape liquid, which can be bought anywhere. All the time I see yours and others videos being downvoted on YT and have to ask myself......WHY? Is it competing tubers that are doing this or, in this case......a vape company (employee) that objected? Or is it SJW millennial twats outraging at something the are scared of? The sooner you (and others like Cody) get off YT the better for the fans!

John Carr

I agree with the other comments - you should launch an appeal with YouTube.

Gadgetman

I think its rather sad that with all the awful things happening in the world (some which are on YouTube - ie News, Documentaries etc) YouTube think that making completely safe e-liquid from a food ingredient is worthy of a strike. I guess someone must have imagined the presence of Nitric Oxide in the video...

LANDLINEMAN.com

What in the heck could possibly be construed as illegal about making your own vape liquid? I know it's a hassle, but you HAVE to appeal this strike!

There's rumours/murmus abound of a "Amazon Tube" at the moment. Apparently have filed for patent and trademark regarding a user generated content site. Could be worth keeping an eye out. If of course it turns in to something and isn't the normal big company filing random patents dance.

Josh Giles

Question - Is the YouTube money (except for Fanny) any good? Perhaps another site, even one that doesn't monetize but at least leaves your content alone is an option?

It shouldn’t be anonymous you should be allowed to know who the accuser is that reported the video. If it is some anonymous account or someone that has reported hundreds of videos it should be ignored.

Lostngone

They (either YouTube or bored nannies) are so stupid. You need to do a makeup tutorial under the guise of "Well, my real content was getting me struck so I'll do what is popular. Either let me do my thing our you'll get more of this."

YouTube is imploding. Time is ripe for a competitor to rise.

The Griffiths Family

YouTube are really descending into a bunch of ass-holes this last year or two.

Pixscotland

Completely agree! There is so much worse on YouTube. There are days when I think that large corporations and governments across the globe want easy-to-manage, non-thinking, non-creative people who can't think for themselves. Those people are so much easier to manage...

Benjamin Hall

What a ridiculous world we live in, where being intelligent and creative is practically treated as criminal, while sitting in front of the TV eating junk food and watching junk programs is perfectly acceptable. I sent YouTube a polite request to remove the strike against your account, explaining that you continually provide intelligent, educational, and entertaining technical videos to their users, and that I really don't think they should be "punishing" you. If they want to take down the video, fine. But it's a bit absurd to penalize you, when there's so much worse crap on YouTube.

Daddy Bearcat

You must appeal that, otherwise you are accepting you have produced illicit content!

That is a nice clear letter. Exactly WHAT in the video are they complaining about? Would be nice to know.

Robert Gibbons

The problem with moving to other platforms than youtube is growth, you might get a lot of your current viewers with you, but I think it will be hard to achieve the same amount of potential viewer growth as you get on Youtube, just because of how many people are on there. I really hope your appeal goes through.

I'm with you, if I could get my aussie ass to silicon valley...

MaximusPsychosis

Here's the entertaining part. they think they are assessing the content like adults, in a way that they got to remove any material that "offends minorities" and "consists of terrors activities" like the e-cig liquid..

MaximusPsychosis

Damn Damn Damn

Michael Thompson

Clive, have you checked out Vimeo? I’m not sure what their policies are but they are an alternative. Best of luck!

Benjamin Lembree

YouTube need to understand what service they and their content providers provide. Specifically you Sir are my medicinal marijuana. Having met you I know you would hate that categorisation. But the truth is your videos are about real world subjects that are entertaining and educational. They keep me sane in an increasingly depressing world. They are not about making anyone go out and break the law. YT should focus on those that do and they should check the vested interests of the complainers

Demolished Man

Flipping ridiculous.

Aaron the Tinkerer

We still love you!

It would be interesting to know if somebody reporting this is a seller of ecigs or liquids who stand to lose some revenue on the distribution of the video I think what you should do is post the video file and allow us all to upload it in tribute to big Clive

Newcastlewatson

make sure you do appeal it

Drachnien

It would be interesting if a viable technical-tube appeared. But the adsense revenue is still useful, so I think that the videos would have to be hosted on both platforms initially. It would be pretty neat to see all the main technology and science channels on their own video platform.

Big Clive

I’m gonna go over to to Google HQ in the morning and protest this most ironic injustice. My god, this company was founded by techies but is now run by a bunch of SJWs! This is the last straw!

Want to be the trailblazer who moves away from YouTube, Clive?

Dan Craggs

I wonder if it was flagged by a Vape product company trying to kill off free competition. From a quick search, there's a channel "Russian Vape" with various vaping products, one with that exact title and unsurprisingly given mostly thumbs-downs, probably from people who landed on it instead of yours.

Seán Byrne

YouTube need to start assessing the content like grown ups. They need to focus on Terorist videos and real crime! Well Clive I prefer Patreon anyway! Keep making the ace vids!

I've spent a couple minutes reading the post and I couldn't understand what it's all about. If you do, would you mind giving us a primer on how it works?

Good to know that a plastic doll with a firework shoved up her is still considered wholesome family entertainment. (Still my fave Big Clive video) But e-cig liquid! The horror! I think I need a lie down! Pass the smelling salts.

Oh FFS, that's just ridiculous Clive. What on earth do they think was "inappropriate" in that video? Youtube's hegemonic content policing is just getting preposterous.

Chewie

It was probably flagged by someone from the NRA. I hear they don't like the rest of us.

Demolished Man

I mean, it's Clive, our most adorable bear in the universe, who cares more than he should about camera framing and focus and apologising for the "edgy" jokes other youtubers wouldn't even notice. WHY, people, WHY?

Clive have you considered looking at FloatPlane? It was setup by Linux TechTips as a way to become less dependant on youtube Adds which can be taken away with little to no notice. https://forum.level1techs.com/t/floatplane-media/115171 you can still release your content in other places (like on youtube) but this way you have more control and no/less risk of content being banned. it's still very early days for FP. only launched alpha a week or so ago.

You're right. They do. Preferably one where they bludgeon themselves with countertops.

Seriously. Tell them go get fucked.

Sweet Jesus on a bike. I'm not surprised by Youtube issuing a strike, but someone HAS ACTUALLY REPORTED the goddamn video. What's wrong with you people?

you sould appeal.

I have. So it'll be interesting to see what happens.

Big Clive

I’m imagining someone with the voice of Techmoan’s YouTube Pedant furiously tapping away flagged it.

The thought police strike again!

Michael Gilchrest

I hope you've appealed the strike.

What does YouTube Red have to do with appeasing advertisers? I thought that the whole point of Red was paying to not see advertisements. That's the only reason I pay for Red.

Mark J. Blair

Damnit Clive... that’s just not fair... there are thousands of channels showing you how to make ecig liquid... why is the educational channel singled out? ... pffft.... big hugs from Dubious Engineering

Youtube doesn't give a flying fudge about small time creators. They cost them money. Google wants to stop hemorrhaging money into Youtube, so they have no interest in facilitating small creators like AvE and Cliff or Cody. Ever since YouTube Red came on scene, as well as YouTube TV, its obvious that Google cares more about big advertiser's preferences and brand safe media. So the little guys will get crushed. I'm wondering if Amazon is watching this and seeing the opportunity. Easily sponsored Amazon Videos (directly link to a product, etc), no worries about being "brand safe", and less of a tight control over creator content.

Witold Witkowski

How is making e-cigarette liquid illegal? And yet we repeatedly here in this country about how they refuse to put any effort into tracking down jihadist or neo-Nazi videos...

Stephen King

Glycerine + Heat = Explosives how to... Oh, wait... I suppose we should en-masse start flagging all sugar alcohol related content, especially Xylitol! It can hold even more energy per mole, which makes it even more dangerous to know about, right? Right!?

Maybe make a BigClive2 channel as a back-up, just in case.

evilution

Cheers for the heads up Clive.

Paul Carey

Lets just hope the video where you tase yourself and the video where you consider electrobuttplugging yourself remain unmolested.

THIS VIDEO WHICH DOESN'T CONCERN MY INTERESTS OFFENDS ME AND MY CHILDREN AND WHAT IF THEY DO THIS I MEAN THEY'LL LIKE DIE OR SOMETHING THIS IS REALLY BAD I MEAN THEY COULD PRACTICALLY MAKE BOMBS WITH THIS STUFF I MEAN THE GALL OF PEOPLE DON'T THEY EVER REALLY THING ABOUT OTHER PEOPLE IT'S LIKE THEY ALMOST DON'T EVEN... Being friends with some of these overly insensitively sensitive people on FB, they don't come from a place of reason.

avfusion

You can easily counter-claim that strike as the guy who probably approved it simply saw a potential explosive thing being used and said "Yep that's a strike".

EpicLPer

have heard, that YT hired 10 thousands monkeys to review all the content, some channels get already few strikes... some of the "national geographic" get strike for showing duck penis :D

Ah, for feck's sakes. Sodding automated algorithms. Constantly gamed by 4chan kiddies.
