How solenoid pumps work.

This video will be of particular interest to those of you who have seasonally used snow and smoke machines that will inevitably not want to play ball when you dig them out this year.

The bit that often fails is the pump, and it's really quite easy to disassemble and repair (or just replace completely) if it fails.

How solenoid pumps work.

You can get the same series motor runaway effect by using just the rotor winding of a universal motor, but the brushes usually end the show by arcing right round the commutator. The angle grinder might have benefitted from an NTC inrush limited to take the edge off the start.

Many of the hazers use the same pump, but run it in pulses with a distinct tapping noise.

I got an Antari Z-350 fazer, the pump in that one only gives up small doses. I wonder if they use same kind of pump, and doing something clever with the solenoid instead, so it wont run as a normal pump, and instead doing precise doses.

Mikey

Excellent! We have an old Antari lying around that stopped working last year after being on the shelf for some time, I'll definitely have a look at this sometime this week!

Clive just a suggestion We know you like a bit of excitement, would you do a bit on series motor that is operated at no load [no chuck or gearbox] and see if you can blow one up, like they said it would when I was a night school back in 1980. Drill or angle grinder might be a bit dangerous so something smaller might be best. I also have recollections of some strange motor wingdings for skin effect induction motors ? Just a thought or two for your channel, I like what you do. I could have done with you looking over my shoulder I was repairing an Automatic golf trolley it just used 3 tiny rubber sealed micro switches, 1 = on/off 2= forward as fast as you walk 3= slower or off. When working at the Blacksmiths shop I used to use a 2.2kw angle grinder with a hell of a kick when you started it, not nice when you got tired at the end of the day. Most Bosh Blue grinder kit we had was safer since you had to hold the power button ON not like today were most of them are just a switch. John

Back again in the 1980, in a back street shop in Lancashire our friend offered to make any O ring we wanted for free ? we used to help him out, I supplied a Status instruments platinum resistance temperature module 0-100mv, it was a nice piece of kit slow to respond and that was what was needed. The chap was called Sharif and he made JVC turntable mats and horses hoof protectors, all done in a knocked through terraced houses. I was astounded a the machine setups he had like an angle grinder with the gearbox removed and a spindle grinder stone attached and mounded on a lathe compound slide. John

It should be viable to nudge the liquid back to stop sporadic bursts of smoke. The control for a peristaltic pump will be a bit more complex though.

I have a smoke machine at home and exactly this pump type broke... i thought about replacing it with one of these quite cheap dosage pumps where the liquid only gets in contact with the tubing. It might work with it but i am not sure. In theory i should also be able to reverse the pumping direction to stop smoke producing in an instance right?

Leon Schutte

It's also used as refrigeration capillary tubing.

Big Clive

by the look of it, the metal pipe - if you need cheap replacements - looks to be the same size as automotive brake pipe replacement tube. Available in copper, or copper/nickel alloy. Its also really cheap from motor factors

In the middle of repairing a hazer and was wondering how these pumps worked. Great timing :D

Such a potentially simple fix for an expensive Martin Magnum smoke machine I was told I couldn't take home and fix when I worked in a nightclub. they replaced it with a Maplin crapbox that had to warm up again after every use... Then again, I was also told I couldn't dismantle the Mac 250's to clean the encoder wheels, yet would still get asked why the spotlights would never return to the exact same position, or why the colour wheel wouldn't go to a solid single colour, or why the gobo wheel was off... They never did get anyone to service the lights in the end...

Marmite

That's an eye opener! I may have taken one of these apart in the past, but didn't really dig deep for fear of breaking other people's things. (I've gotten over that a long time ago) :D

Michael Thompson

Really good timing with the solenoid pumps as I repair my coffee vending machine that has one.

springs and O rings pinging every were it would not be right it that never happened

God 420

Nope, doesn’t matter, either lead, either way assuming the fog machine doesn’t have an overly complicated driver design.

evilution

Does it matter which way round the diode goes? I’m assuming it doesn’t as it simply clips the wave form to make half wave.
