Dead Japanese sign lamp.

I was sent a couple of these lamps to see if I could work out why there was a fairly high failure rate of new lamps.  (The lamp is probably manufactured in China.)

Higher frequency results in higher current, but there's not too much difference with just 10 Hz.

How much does frequency change the equation for choosing the dropper capacitor? Because as I understand it Japan is half 50 and half 60hz.

Bummer. Everything got destroyed except that one SMD resistor. Terrible when it's so FINAL.

I think they may have just pushed the cap beyond it's limits. The intensity of the lamp isn't very high.

That's what, night light lamp or a little brighter? Either they under rated that cap by accident, or they figured the failure rate would result in people ordering more, just enough, where they still made a profit.
