New 3D printer (Not a video).

This is just a text post with an image and not a link to a video (yet).

I've finally succumbed to temptation and bought a Cetus 2 3D printer.

With clear PLA filament it makes great hollow crystals that take light from the base very well.  The layers actually work to spread the light fairly evenly over the whole crystal.

Clear filament is fun. One of my favorite prints is this iceberg to go with a mini Titanic. <a href="https://i.imgur.com/yFiwN9U.png" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://i.imgur.com/yFiwN9U.png</a>

I may have gotten carried away with printer crystals the last 2 days. Sadly only gone through about half filaments on hand, I did not realize just how many I actually had. <a href="https://i.imgur.com/qAMsXL2.jpg" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://i.imgur.com/qAMsXL2.jpg</a> Ended up going for a different crystal model, the other had a unsupported bit in the center if printed hallow. Found this one that is fully supported from bottom up. <a href="https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3031049" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3031049</a> Doing this really makes me want to print sample tokens for all the different filaments I have on hand, something where I can have the print labeled and put it on a big ring.

MG Chemicals makes a nice looking hot pink PLA that is florescent (they also have a neon green). So far its the only one like that I've been able to find. I've had issues printed it on my previous printers, but so far its worked just fine on the new i3 MK3 I got. <a href="https://i.imgur.com/qAMsXL2.jpg" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://i.imgur.com/qAMsXL2.jpg</a> Its the front center one in this pick. It works really well when internally by either a UV or blue LED, even other colors work out pretty well. I made a bunch of xmas light covers last year and was slowly putting them on the tree after each finished to see how long till anybody noticed. x3

Kadah

Shouldn't you have used transparent pink filament?

I would love a 3D printer but can't justify the cost right now. One day though!

Welcome to the rabbit hole of 3D printing!

This one came with the clamp for stopping the Z axis from plummeting at power-off. It's very critical. Literally a tiny fraction of a turn from barely holding it in place to causing a failed initialisation with the load sensing stopping the Z axis from reaching its calibration point. The fan is very noisy. I'll take a look at the Noctuna fan.

I made a nice RGB LED lamp last year with a black glas bottle (Valhalla) and a bit of WS2812B+arduino. Now I see your crystal and think of translucent, coloured PLA and endless opportunities in shapes and sizes of LED lamps. Gonna order some new PLA tonight!

That's pretty. I bought a few Repraps some years ago and turned one of them into a work-in-progress at the local hacklab but I must confess I have never actually used a 3d printer for anything useful - talk about expensive doorstops! I guess you need creativity as well as techy prowess to realise their full potential :)

Yo same. This seems like a super cool idea.

avfusion

This seems up your alley as well: <a href="https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1188083" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1188083</a>

It also smells, is messy, and is very bad for your skin in its uncured form.

I was considering one of the resin based units, but the availability of the resin is still a bit tricky.

Big Clive

This is the one I printed. <a href="https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:921487" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:921487</a> If you search for quartz crystal you can find a wide variety of them.

I recently upgraded my main printer last weekend to a Prusa i3 Mk3 (built from kit because I love a good kit build). The Cetus is a good choice and if I didn't have the MP Mini V2 and now the i3, I'd possibly be consisting it. 3D printing has been a lot of fun and plenty of new things to learn. My first was a RepScrap built from old paper printer parts, it worked well enough to print it's own upgrades. Be learning CAD (Fusion360 mostly) and designing random things (and sometimes hiding dickbutts inside them). I'm in the preplanning and early procurement stages of a BigClive inspired project. Hoping to talk a friend in to helping conspire on it. Electromagneticaudiovisual, pretty sure that's a legal word. Anyone got a link to that crystal model? I've seen it a number of times lately and I'd like to try it in several of the translucent filaments I have. Defiantly hot pink first.

Kadah

Never thought about making things out of transparent PLA.

Shaun Runham

That looks fantastic, never tried transparent filament in my old CTC Makerbot clone machine but I just got an LCD SLA machine with some transparent resin so it would be interesting to try some custom LED caps.

Matt Tester

Yay, congrats!

I own a Cetus too :) I suggest you to print a Z-Axis holder for the printer and a Noctuna fan for silence :) Its a nice printer. Oh and theres a CPU replacement named tinyfab. xyz for gcode printing

Makes me think of a 3d printed project of mine from a few months back that was inspired by you: <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VbkYZFv00I" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VbkYZFv00I</a>

Nice one!

Can't wait to see the mad/inspired stuff you'll print!

John Carr

Nice one Clive.

Nuts 'n' Proud

Very nice. It reminds me of a set made for Yes concerts by Roger Dean back in the 1970s - not that I saw it myself. That, however, would have been assembled from sheets of fibreglass. Anyone who likes this sort of thing should go to capturedlightning.com and look at Stoneridge Engineering's Lichtenberg figures in acrylic blocks. They use a particle accelerator to charge their samples in the million-volt range, so this is a level of electricity that most of us will never experience.

Stephen King

Ho ho. 3d printing shenanigans. I've been using my ender 3 to print custom project cases. It's a rabbit hole once you get going.

Wim

Just the other day I was thinking to myself, that it was kind of surprising you didn't have one. It'll be an excellent addition to your projects.

Yes, I will.

Big Clive

They've now evolved to the point where they are much simpler to setup and use than in the beginning. This one is compact but its use of proper linear bearings makes it rock solid. It's very nicely engineered. Not perfect, but good enough that I had my first 3D print much sooner than I had expected.

Big Clive

Alas it's the stock colour of an existing LED base. But the cold white actually suits the quartz effect of the crystal.

Big Clive

Now the real magic begins folks. And we happy few, we band of brothers were here to see the start of it. Mark my words.

Michael Thompson

Eeek! Is that a cold white LED??? Big Clive are you feeling alright???

Lostngone

Great stuff Clive The Cetus is a good machine Love your videos look forward to many more.

I am excited about this development!

Jeremy Impson

I so did that!

Neil Tonks

kryptonite is green

God 420

As long as it involves LEDs does it matter lol

Neil Tonks

i can't just imagine what you will print .. no one can

God 420

That’s awesome! I also got a 3D printer a few days ago. The Ender 3. Linear rails are great!

That's nice, great potential combined with some of the cheap led sets.

Denis Looby

I'm so glad you've jumped into the 3d printing pool. You seem to have taken to it like a duck to water. Excited to see where you run with it.

Phr3d13

That is fantastic.

Looking forward to a video on this, very interested.

Thanks for specifying that it wasn’t a video. That definitely would have had me swearing at Patreon, trying to tap the “video” embedded on the page.

Love my 3d printers (anycubic photon and Chiron, creality cr10 and ender2’s). Check out 3dqf for cheap uk made filament

Ivan Hartley

that's beautiful! are you gonna make a video about your new printer Clive?

Superman would be proud

Looks great, have fun :-)

ColdRFusion

Oh this is getting intolerable! Now I want a 3D printer .... Merry Christmas Neil!

Neil Tonks

Clive, I hope you make some videos showing the printer in operation. :D

Martel DuVigneaud

Let the large scale fanny flambo production begin

Lots of people with new toys. :-)

Neat.

blizzy

YAY! I love 3D printers.
