Failing LED tubes.

I spotted this while hunting for electronic tat in Glasgow.  It's a rather crappy LED lighting conversion in a large store.

Failing LED tubes.

I convinced my boss to let me replace all of our clusters of 4x 55w fluorescents with these new flat led panels. 1/10th of the total wattage. I have 58 units to replace, I do hope they last a few years, this video makes me nervous now!!

These are on ebay. Just search for "superior quality upgraded LED tube light floodlight 100000000 lumes 5w green energy" order anything from china. You're welcome.

such wow great quality

Where I work I have seen the evolution of replacement LED tubes for florescent ones. What's funny is you can really tell the places that are hard to get to because...they still have florescents in them. It is quite visible how much more yellow the light is from them, especially since they've been left in service for so very long. ...and how flickery the original replacements get. LOL Awesome, Clive

One museum I was at in Crete had this happening with a few display stands. There were technicians there working on the lighting above one display, which made me wonder if this is an ongoing issue there with whatever LED tube-replacements they went with.

I used to work at a place that decided it was a good thing to convert our workshop lighting to these newfangled 'daylight bulbs'. All well and good but they didn't just change them all, no when one failed they replaced it. We ended up with a patchwork quilt of warm and cold lighting that was just painful to work in.

Kelvin

It does look like a large number have failed

Kelvin

sure they didn’t lose a phase of power?

Michael Gilchrest

Yes and if you turn the lights on and off 4 times quickly they start flashing S-O-S... πŸ˜†

Lostngone

I did the same in my office 18 months ago (Hyperikon tubes / rewired the fixtures). So far so good.

If I walked into a big shop with light flickering like that, I'd leave within a couple of minutes. I can't handle the flashing. I'd also complain on the way out.

John Carr

They're not failed, they're just in rave mode.

This is why I don't like the drop-in replacement tubes. There's still a fluorescent ballast supplying high-voltage AC to the fixture, and then each "bulb"/tube has to convert that back down to low-voltage DC to run the LEDs. The double-conversion is inefficient, but it also seems that the stuff dealing with the high voltage fries pretty quickly, giving you these flickering tubes (or worse).

I've been slowly replacing my flourescent tubes with the LED's from Hyperikon. They appear to be a quality brand and some have been in service now for over a year with no issues. I chose the kind that you have to remove the ballast and rewire the fixture. They also light quicker and brighter in my shop when it is cold. The old flourescents always flickered and took time to warm up.

George Cohn

Too bad they aren't properly shitty and providing the nice warm glow of fire light.

The dripping sarcasm is perfect.

Yeah, I'd get a headache from those almost immediately.

There is a lot of crap out there, some of it even makes it's way through the main dealer networks, it has been hard to weed out the crap. It's only recently that the bigger players have been upping the quality on their stuff and taking a step away from the rebadging market, this is making it easier to select quality fittings.

Everything is China made!!!

The Tinkering Shed

Imagine having to work there. I'd have a meltdown.

China Made?

We recently had our hotel switched to THE style direct wire LED tubes and they last about 1/4 of the life of the old florescents. They either blink, flicker, or just go dim. Some of them the electrolytic capacitors grenaded inside. There's a lot of crap out there.
