Another very pleasing 12V lamp.

This must be one of my favourite 12V lamps to date.  The circuitry is minimal and the construction seems good.  I could see lamps like this paving the way for whole house DC lighting systems, and it's perfect for off-grid applications or even use in ultra safe low voltage festoon lighting that could be used at low level.

Once again I've included a search link in the video description that will help you find these.  It's a UK eBay link, but links to Chinese listings.

I bought a couple of these for my off grid PV installation on 12V. And yes I made the mistake trying to meassure the powerfactor and stuck it in my Hopy. Crack!!..... and it's gone :) . Sometimes people do stupid things.

I imagine you might run into problems with significant voltage drop in the wiring...

I bought a number of these in the summer time and have been pleased much as you are. They really do dim nicely. I've used some with the cheap rotary knob eBay PWM dimmers as well as with one of the "Magic Home WiFi" RGBW LED strip controllers that can be configured for single channel dimming operation. I also scooped a few of the 3 volt version of this lamp and have used it in a couple solar lamp projects. I found a discontinued solar spot light that uses a LiFePo4 cell for a few dollars and attached a pendant light to it and it works a treat.

When converting to solar this quality of bulb would obviate the need for at least the lighting to go through the inverter system. It would need its own circuits installed of course. I have a small flat panelTV that uses a walwart delivering 12 VDC to the panel. In time most AV stuff could run on 12 or 24 VDC. That just leaves appliances that run heavy motors and heating elements that need higher VAC for efficiency. The main hurdle is installing dedicated low VDC wiring in existing homes. The inverter might still be a cheaper way to I guess.

Yes. Just a slight skidmark. The device that I plugged in started off not quite OK and then went all the way.

I'm not really sure if there's a common standard for 12V sockets. Many small items seem to come with the cigarette lighter sockets which aren't that great.

24V would be a sensible option for keeping current lower.

That IS a really neat bulb!

Oh no, is the deathdapter okay?

I've been thinking when i get a house to ad in separate 12vdc circuit running lights and some sockets for phone chargers and that kind of thing. With a battery and a solar panel that might save a few bucks on power, and not cost too much since the big appliances would still use 230v. That would also simplify the 230v system in the house, and save some more money since anyone can do 12v legally here. Since i use wood for heating anyways I would barely notice a power failure... Until dinner time at least :P Question for Clive and everyone else: Dos your country have a standard for 12vdc household power sockets? My country does not, but most setups I've seen use a plug similar to the normal euro one, but with one pin being thicker so it will not fit a euro socket and can not be plugged i reverse.

It makes a lot of sense to move to DC now that we have led bulbs, but I wonder whether a voltage higher than 12 might be better for a whole house system.

the struggle i had to find nice, ES 12v filament lamps for a garden project ( solarpanel -> battery -> coach lanterns ) on my decking - waited ages to get some from ALI or banggood ( all great btw ) but lately you've reviewed a few - typical lol ( had mine about a year, still not finished the project lol )
