Emulating pyro misfiring.

Part of the reason I have a second bench for filming is to allow more explosive incidents. The main bench has too much flammable stuff in the same room to be safe for deliberate pyrotechnic stunts.

So here's the first pyro video at the new bench. A test of series wired electric matches to see if I can cause a series circuit misfire.

The pro systems do use capacitor discharge.

Big Clive

Couldn't you simply discharge a large capacitor, charged to a high voltage, and connect it across the firing circuit? That would help overcome high resistance joints and dump a decent charge into each match.

Jonas Otter

More exploding resistor art please... how about a small 5w wirewound and some match heads!

Interesting Clive.. Since these are driven by constant current, wouldn't placing a non-linear device like a 1N4001 diode across each detonator ensure that current flowed even if the device failed on deployment, guaranteeing current to subsequent devices in the chain?

Search for jelly crimps on eBay to find cheap sets of the pliers.

Big Clive

These are quite a bit like the Estes rocket engine igniters they sell for hobby rockets. The firing buttons also often have an LED that shows if the igniter and wiring is intact.

Daddy Bearcat

Fascinating stuff!

OMG there's a proper tool for scotchlocks??? I'm embarrassed to say but I haven't used many of them, and when I did I always used a pair of lineman's pliers on them. I love this channel! Also...EXPLOSIONS!

Michael Thompson

Aaaaaand..... demonetised. Didn't realised that they used Scotchloks in pyro wiring, but it makes perfect sense I suppose, gel-filled and all. Very interesting. Please continue good sir. :)

I made my own a very long time ago and documented it as a website project. http://www.bigclive.com/pyro.htm

It did smell great afterwards.

I borrowed a pyro shot box a number of years ago for setting off e matches and it had a low current continuity LED to check the circuit with. Should have cracked it open to diagram it to wire my own.

*re static discharge--- I was taught to wear only natural fibre , never had a static problem in 25 plus years. Had a few other misfires , usually with Chinese igniters..

I love the smell of pyrotechnics first thing in the morning! Love it Clive, more Pyro if you please :D

more explosions please... I mean volatile experiments.. lol great work Clive.
