Super shady UVC lamp.

This is one of those things that is so completely dodgy that it makes it desirable.  If you want a compact fluorescent lamp (220V) that will expose the whole room it's used in to dangerous levels of UVC light then this might be for you.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1m0TQjBRcFo

It's from China (where else) and the magic keywords are E27 and germicidal.  Note that I haven't come across 110/120V ones.  Also note that this lamp really can cause skin and eye damage, and generates enough ozone to be unpleasant very quickly.

There's a hint that it may control dust and bed mites, but I'm not sure how accurate that is.

Super shady UVC lamp.

Already have one (designed for a pond filter) to decontaminate the children’s pool, hardly any chlorine required and that is only 11w and a 9000 litre frame pool

Graham Eida

I have ordered one, will be interesting if it can decontaminate no.1 sons room πŸ€”πŸ˜‚

Graham Eida

I'd guess it won't put out too much UV or even ozone. It's probably mainly to keep the insides sterile. A Roomba with a UV lamp underneath could crawl about slowly and sterilise a carpet. Not sure it would be an efficient way to do it though.

Big Clive

I was recently looking at buying a desiccant dehumidifier with one of these inside. Being UV, does it damage fabrics and plastics I wonder if you could stick this into a roomba to "clean" carpet hahaha

Slot1Gamer

They seem to recommend up to about half an hour. Just make sure there's no person or pets in the room while it's doing its job.

Big Clive

so kinda bought one and some what now scared of it. whats the recommended run time for complete room exposure?

btSchmieds

It's called Tru D and they describe it as a robot. (It's not).

And since interesting things always come in (insert number here)s, this just popped up on reddit: <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/mildlyinteresting/comments/8tjcao/this_is_a_uv_light_used_in_hospitals_to/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.reddit.com/r/mildlyinteresting/comments/8tjcao/this_is_a_uv_light_used_in_hospitals_to/</a> (I suspect that one's a bit more expensive, though).

It produces a lot of ozone on its own as well as irradiating stuff in the vicinity with the UVC.

Big Clive

How does its germicidal capabilities compare to an ozone generator?

David Glover-Aoki

The glass should screen the UVC but there would be a high ozone level inside the enclosure. Hi vis work clothing fluoresces, but I'm not sure how much of that is the visible blue versus the UVC.

Big Clive

Or run it through a step up transformer...

Michael Thompson

As a scientist, for a mere Β£10 you can answer these questions yourself ;-)

Gordo

Would this be as dangerous if it was in a glass enclosure? What effect on fluorescent items like a safety vest?

Germicidal lamps have already been fitted in insect killers accidentally. It takes a while for the symptoms of eye irritation and skin rash to be traced to the insect unit. I'd guess that some never get detected.

Take heart fellow low voltage sufferers, there IS a 110V version, but it's pricey (although you CAN get it with a timer base and even a remote). It appears to only have two tubes instead of four, but it claims 40W: <a href="https://www.aliexpress.com/item/40W-Ozone-UV-Disinfection-lamp-Household-Ultraviolet-Lamp-UV-Germicidal-Lamp-0-55-sq-m-Sterilizing/32454137748.html" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.aliexpress.com/item/40W-Ozone-UV-Disinfection-lamp-Household-Ultraviolet-Lamp-UV-Germicidal-Lamp-0-55-sq-m-Sterilizing/32454137748.html</a>

Good old AliExpress; scroll down to the "Features" (they actually suggest that you can use it as normal lighting, or "in a family environment"): <a href="https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Smuxi-E27-UVC-Ultraviolet-UV-Light-Tube-Bulb-20W-Disinfection-Lamp-Ozone-Sterilization-Mites-Lights-Germicidal/32812239467.html" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Smuxi-E27-UVC-Ultraviolet-UV-Light-Tube-Bulb-20W-Disinfection-Lamp-Ozone-Sterilization-Mites-Lights-Germicidal/32812239467.html</a>

I wouldn't be surprised if someone buys this by mistake thinking it's a replacement light for a bug zapper! I'm not sure how the brightness compares, although the proper UVA bug zapper bulbs have a phosphor coating like this example: <a href="https://www.ebay.ie/itm/112517321766" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.ebay.ie/itm/112517321766</a>

I'm probably overly cautious, but I get a bit nervous about a UVC lamp that isn't in an enclosure with safety interlock (as good EPROM erasers, aquarium water sterilizers, etc. do) :)

Jamie Magin

Jesus monte cristo this is amazingly dangerous. I should get one to disinfect my dungeon after the weekend. hahaha

PeetieGonzalez

I've been trying it in various rooms before it gets dark (so my house doesn't look like a grow house from outside) and it certainly seems to freshen the place up odour and ozone wise. Not sure what other effect it has. But it's a desirable thing to have just because of its dangerous nature.

Big Clive

It's a deliberately click-bait style title because I want people to see these so they recognise them if they see them. It's a stealth safety message.

Big Clive

Yes. It turns your room into a cube of oxygen.

Big Clive

Keep in mind they are 220/240V. If the voltage is OK for your part of the world they're only about Β£10 each.

Big Clive

I was looking for the standard T5 UVC tubes for an earlier video about the different types of UV tube available on eBay.

Big Clive

Even with the camera knocking it down you can tell that it has a very nice glow to it. Is there any value in exposing each room of your home to this treatment? I could see this being effective in certain instances, but then being the aforementioned delicious and attractive deadly threat otherwise. Lovely!

Michael Thompson

Just popped in to give a thumbs-up for the youtube video title. I'm assuming that it's going to be demonetised before it's even publically listed. Nice to see that you've taken the "MOAR DANGAR" calls from the patrons seriously Clive. ;)

Chris Talbot

Did it say OΒ³ instead of O₃?

Tsia

Hmm, im struggling to resist purchasing one.. im thinking it would be great for sterilizing the Rabbit shed once a month or once a week in summer lol (Not with the rabbits or anyone in there of course)

What were you searching for to find that? πŸ™‚

So it’s basically a bug light for humans???

Lostngone

XD Nice.. This could be handy though if a rancid Turkey explodes in your kitchen.. ?

Ms. Fixit

Always up late, although I did doze off earlier.

Big Clive

Up late again Clive ;)
