Exploded remote switch autopsy.

This remote switch was sent in earlier in the year by Timothy who had been in the process of plugging it in when it went bang.

Here's an autopsy to see what went wrong.

My favorite DMM is a Triplett 9007-A which is identical to that broken one from AMECal but red. Never had that problem but I'll bet it's just broken plastic. A tiny smear of JB Weld ought to fix it.

I have had one (out of three) fail in fifteen years. The relay switching transistor mutated into a non-transistor for no obvious reason, but was fairly easily replaced. I didn't think to check the cap, though, and some of them do now seem to be bit sluggish. So perhaps that's a next step, one day. But awkward to get the things apart and back together again, as you showed. I, too, recall being surprised at the discrete circuitry for the receiver.

To be fair, I think this is the first one I've seen fail like this. The capacitors do degrade over time though and cause the units to switch themselves off repeatedly.

Please make a video of fixing your multimeter!

I have quite a few of these that have served well over the last 8 years or so, recently gave them to my daughter and her husband. Think I'll recall them and upgrade the resistors Thanks Clive as usual great video.

220 ... 221... whatever it takes..

Interesting plug, but my ears perked up when I heard the multimeter was coming apart...

It would be quite interesting, but it could involve quite a lot of the circuitry on that PCB.

My favorite subject matter. Sleuthing out what went bang! Second favorite .... it goes bang! Thanks Big Clive. Learned a lot as usual.

I challenge you to fix the one that went BANG ..

I have to say I donโ€™t think much of the 4a / 1000w rating on these. It limits what you can plug into it, and even something 3a will run it at almost full capacity. The Byron Smartwares ones I have had for years which I have just upgraded are rated 12.5a / 3000w. None of them have ever blown up and the remotes on the new ones have been upgraded from 3v to 12v which has improved the range enormously.

Just goes to show that the mantra of a throw away culture is bad.. you can fix atleast some things.. and learn stuff at the same time! Great video as usual.

I can tell you what went wrong.....it was made in a factory in China! ๐Ÿ˜‚
