A nice rambly one for the weekend.

Here's a nice chilled out Q&A type video while making a wiring loom for props.  Grab a drink and some snacks, and kick back.

A nice rambly one for the weekend.

Clive. America NEEDS you on their electric-chair design team ;-)

That's genius - using a lithium battery as a heat-sink.. What could possible go wrong???

Gordo

I do a lot of wire twisting. I knot the two wires together, fit a cup-hook in my drill, catch the knot with the hook and start 'drilling'

I got the tool from Rapid Electronics in the UK. It does take a bit of getting used to though. I found it very slow and frustrating at first.

Big Clive

love those molex connectors. I use them all the time. but I gave up trying to use a proper crimping tool. I ended finding it *less* fiddly to just use a pair of needle nose pliers....Xurons no less! :)

Chris Sutton

Almost all phones use the battery as a heat sink. It's pretty terrible, and leads to situations where you can "overclock" your phone by resting it on a block of ice - the CPU is most often throttled to keep the battery temperature down.

George Dorn

The LED grommet needs a hole that is slightly larger than the connector. At worst the corners of the connector can be shaved down slightly.

Big Clive

Are the LEDs going to be fished down from the eyes or up from the bottom? If it's down from the eyes, won't the connector be to large to fit through the eye?

Kadah

I'll ask if they can take a picture.

Big Clive

Can we see the finished product when done please? :)

Contention ratio I think

I've considered using an iPhone, but would need to test them in an identical way first. My close work and need for a good depth of field at short range causes issues with many cameras. In the past I used an iPad. Of three iPads I've had all of them had technical issues out of the shop. One with a microphone issue, one with false screen input that happened in random bursts and one that had the camera mounted at an angle.

"Tree Cat"

I travel with work, so having everything in one device that I can record, edit and upload from is handy.

Big Clive

Stranded is better where cables can get moved and soldered connections are involved. Solid core is prone to snapping at connections in mobile looms.

Big Clive

As you have various smallish problems with using phones for your videos, I'm curious why you don't use a consumer video camera instead. They tend not to have the problems like restarting when a video reaches 1/2 hour or having overheating problems from continuous recording... phones just aren't optimized for serious video use as they typically aren't used that way.

Charles

Why stranded? In the telecom industry stranded wire is shunned as inferior due to the fact that you can't wire-wrap it or punch it down reliably.

Jeff Groves

I'm using open camera with default phone settings and the fastest card I could find. Talking to friends with identical phones they are having the same issues.

Big Clive

The UK did use round pin plugs years ago and you can still get round pin ones which are now used so people can't plug the normal items into special circuits as far as I know i.e. ones run from emergency / backup generators. Think back in the day the old one didn't have the plastic sleeves on the live and neutral which the new ones do.

I don't use the turbo charger, and have the phone on its own while recording.

Big Clive

Rather predictably I remembered as soon as I stopped recording.

Big Clive

I like your rambly videos. Watching them feels like time well spent. Never gonna use the word contention ratio though, haha.

+1 vote for Big Clive. Eliminate the barzids! Btw, I have a g4 plus, the included "turbopower" USB supply makes the bugger get hot when charging with it's 12v goodness. Perhaps this is contributing to the overheat/recording frame drop problem?

Wim

You probably remembered by now but the phrase is "Contention Ratio".

I am in the same situation and perfectly content. I’ve got my dog, and plenty of time to spend at my workbench!

People have preconceptions about Apple products but you can't go wrong with an iPhone for video recording and audio. Just don't update it.

evilution

There are other camera apps that may not compress the video as much - if whatever storage you're using can keep up.

While I grant the UK plug has certain safety advantages over the one we use here in the USA - it does strike me as really big and clumsy, and the US version does have one notable safety advantage over it. Obviously when the UK plug/socket were designed they apparently didn't consider the idea that power strips or "death-daptors" might eventually be a thing, so the one real deficiency I see in it is that the ground pin will fit into a live or neutral under certain circumstances; making the ground a round pin that wouldn't fit into the live or neutral openings (as on the US design) is a change I'd make to it. So my question is - if there were to be a BigClive design for a common AC plug and socket - what would it be? Presume that backwards compatibility isn't a requirement - you have a free hand to design the system, and while I'm mainly thinking about ordinary household or office use, if you have ideas for related setups for higher voltage/amperage industrial use, that would be interesting as well.

Now I really want to see this electric chair with fairground lights and politicians...

Do you enjoy your bachelor lifestyle to the confusion of married folk? I am of similar age and single and I get frustrated with people asking if I am lonely.

Clive, I've tought myself to watch videos with my finger on the space bar. When I start to doze off, I automatically pause the video.

Clive, as a fellow G4 sufferer, go through all the bloatware & disable it. This seems to have the effect of dropping them back to the factory versions as well as stopping them from running in the background. Once this is done, the phone actually seems to be a nice bit of gear again.

Scott Miller

Not sure. I bought mine from a local tool shop.

hello from Canada

God 420

Just wondering if your favorite wire strippers are available ebay. Please post a link if they are. Keep up the good work!!!

Woo hoo! Ramble on, Clive! Personally I knot the two strands and use a hook on my drill. No real issues with that method that I can recall, but if it works, it's good! :D
