Behind the scenes snippet.

This is a very short snippet of video showing the gas guys connecting up the huge blazing burners we have in the moat and on the top of the castle.  It also shows our retracting band stage for some of the military performers.  It retracts down into the moat during the day and raises out for the show.  We have some of the castle speakers on hydraulic lifts too, so they can be hidden out of sight when the show isn't running too.

The clip also shows some of our flight cases hidden under the drawbridge of the castle.  All the equipment in the moat gets craned in and the cases stored out of sight.  They're also useful for storing spare equipment.

This clip probably isn't going to get released for general viewing.

THE GREATER GOOD!

There are two types of laser in use. A low power unit with a small range of simple diffraction effects and bigger units with scanning and also two rotating diffraction effects. The scanning units are aimed above audience/crew height and the starfield units have their central beam blocked and do fire into the audience with low power wide beams. Every night I go into the empty auditorium, select 10 of the brightest dots and we log their location and intensity on an online form. They're typically in the region of a few tens of microwatts.

Cool stuff Clive! I used to enjoy working with mechanical and pyro guys when I was doing sound and lighting, they always seem to be an interesting bunch of characters. :) Yay for lasers, boo for oppressive safety regulations and paperwork. Ah well, it's all for the The Greater Good I suppose... [THE GREATER GOOD... reminds me I need to go and watch "Hot Fuzz" once again :)] Well done for managing to still get videos out despite the hectic schedule and workload. Cheers mate.

I love these glimpses behind the scenes!

Thanks for the post Clive, I’ve loved the Tattoo since I was a kid, the behind the scenes stuff is great. One day seeing it in person is on my list. Do the lasers have a safety area? I guess the measurements are taken at the audience distance?

Rob Googe

More work this year because we have an extra layer of lasers for the finale. It also means I have to walk around the arena every night after the audience has gone to take a series of samples of laser intensity for the laser safety records.

Big Clive

Not as noisy as it gets on the esplanade or the pyro launch areas.

Always love the tattoo videos - soooo much work involved. Gonna have to get to see it in person sometime.

John Carr

Sounds VERY NOISY in the moat!

Thanks for the clip. It's always a good day when I get notified about a new Big Clive video!

There's a continuous airflow through the domes that cools them and keeps them inflated.

Nice snippet :). Is the build-up of heat not a concern for those lights with, I presume, a raincover on them?
