I wonder if they are living in joints between the wood. Maybe a fumigation bomb would work. Or a UVC lamp left inside for a while.

As disgusting as this may appear, at least dealing with it is usually as simple as tossing it in the bin. In our case last year, we opened a pack of flour to find it riddled with grain beetles. We then noticed all the surrounding packs of other flours had pin holes, which meant some beetles had escaped and infested the other products, including a full box of Maltesers. Indeed they ate through the foil sweet wrappings! Despite discarding all the infested products outside and our attempts to clean everything down, we can no longer store flour in the cupboard in its original paper packaging as it will have pinholes a day or two later, a clear sign of beetles still around. The only way we can store flour and other food products these beetles attack (e.g. breakfast cereals, spices, sweets, etc.) is in sealed hard plastic containers.

I recommend you to be really careful with mold. Yes, some few types of mold are borderline harmless. But the majority is everything else than harmless. Molds are producing mycotoxins like few other organisms. The worst molds don't grow in Scotland I think, so it won't get into the rice there. But it's common in USA and a bit longer south in Europe. These molds are Aspergillus parasiticus and Aperfillus flavus, they make the toxin group aflatoxines, witch are of the worst carcinogens known. <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aflatoxin" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aflatoxin</a>

Always learning from Clive! I learned "color" could be spelt as "colour" I've learned that "ground" is the same as "earth". Now I've learnt how to spell "mold" as "mould".

Looks horrible, am so going to double check before buying any of these in future. But did it smell worse than the Surstromming?

I can smell that from here, probably similar to the bag of bird seed in our outside store that had a hole in the bottom and rotted from underneath.
