When I was a student living at Pollock Halls, each room had its own electricity meter which required continual feeding with 50p coins. I used to lie in bed and could hear the damn buzzing, even when I knew there was no load. I was *this* close (makes "miniscule" gesture) to contacting janitorial and demanding that they change it when I realized it was running BACKWARD and giving me a (tiny amount) of credit each night. I reckoned janitorial had enough on their hands, what with all the shoddily soldered light fittings et al

Unfortunately, I usually wind up fixing stuff in my permanent accommodation, as the landlord is a flaming shitheel. Good thing I know which is the stabby end of a screwdriver, eh?

Good to see I’m not the only one that fixes things in temporary accommodation :)

i believe the having of tools and the willingness to use them may have contributed to the initial breaking
