Meet the projectionists.

One of the significant parts of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is the projection on the castle which creates a spectacular animated backdrop to the arena.

I asked some of your questions to Karen the projectionist.

A friend of a friend works for the production company that handles quite a bit of the lighting and projection for the Vivid Sydney festival, specifically the projection system that paints amazing live murals on the Sydney Opera House. He mentioned that their software allows them to superimpose an outline of the shells from a given projector location onto the projected composite image, essentially "auto-cropping" the image to match the actual shape of the projection surface at a specific throw distance. The "Watch Out" software mentioned here sounds really similar, am I in the ballpark? Nice bit of extra exposition re. catastrophic lamp failures too! Thanks :)

During the load in of the show we had a couple of PRG trainees helping set it up. Many of the followspot operators are theatre students getting a taste of working on a real show (they do get paid too.)

Just wondering, are there many/any apprentices working at the Tattoo? All the people you interviewed seem to be "well experienced". Is there any young uns coming up that'll be looking after the show in 10-20 years time?

It's an incredibly complex time delay system they spend lots of time programming the TiMax delay matrix.

I do always wonder how the speed of sound plays into making everything synch up on large outdoor shows like that.

Sounds like I need to go to Edinburgh next year. Maybe go to a meetup and then see the tatoo.
