USB powered wall hook?

Suggested by John Harrison, this is a test and a look inside a USB powered wall hook.

It's actually a lot more complex inside than I was expecting.

USB powered wall hook?

I'm sure the guys at 3M are giggling and shaking their heads at this miraculous invention. The only thing that's missing is a wifi connection to some terrible "myHooks" IoT app that lets you register all of your hooks, set a variety of blinking patterns on the internal leds, and remotely start the "remelt" cycle over the internet so you can arrive home to the job of cleaning blobs and strings of hot glue off your walls. Technology!

Class example of a solution looking for a problem...

My first thought too. And all those tacky informercials that accompanied it..

I wonder if connector J1 is for programming the microcontroller - it looks like there might just be slight indentations in the solder from sort sort of bed-of-nails programming jig..

ah probably won't be able to get them then probably going to be some months before i am able to visit a poundland again but yes i do agree very stylish.

It's very stylish. I got it from Poundland in the UK.

Would anyone be able to link where the colourful USB cable came from, might pick a couple up

That has to be the most absurd use of technology I've seen for a while. And we wonder why aliens don't contact us... *facepalm*

A bit of a miracle of misapplied technology!

I'm actually enjoying some mild cheddar cheese & crackers. Or would it be càise cheddar agus brògan?

Anyone else drinking and building whilst watching this? :D

I've had some of those sitting on my bench for a while, but didn't have an NFC equipped phone to test them with. They actually require that your phone's NFC coil is transmitting all the time to power them, which seems like it's going to take a toll on battery life.

Clive, as you are already known as an excellent hand model, and a lover of anything with an LED, I hope you will model some of these for us: <a href="https://www.sparkfun.com/products/14885" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.sparkfun.com/products/14885</a>

did nobody else think "duzzit handy hanger" ? <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QtpWxfOl2Lw" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QtpWxfOl2Lw</a>

Yeah, my question also. I'm the second owner of my home, the first owners added several of the old tape/glue hooks in the master bathroom. I haven't tried to remove them because I'm sure half the drywall would come with them if I tried. Now a mirror, maybe a hook to hang something from? Possibly, because you could always clean the residue off the mirror eventually. But a wall?

But....why? If it doesn't come off any cleaner than the double sided / foamy tape ones I just don't see the point.

I can’t decide whether this is genius or terrible. In these cases, the answer is usually yes.

evilution

They're the spare glue pads for re-use of the hook.

an interesting topic. I remember self warming cans in the 80s, a compartment in the base had a charcoal material and a pull tab to ignite it, enough fuel to heat your tin of soup or coffee. Now it would take around 150 watts 10 mins to heat a mug of liquid based on my travel kettle, and at 5v that is 30 amps of 5v. possible from Li-po? maybe.

I had to check it wasn't 1st April.

Ok. It works. It seems like a bizzare waste of tech to put a hook up. The heating element looks like a tiny BBQ grill for small bits of food.

Nani Isobel

Hot glue usually peels of rather cleanly in one blob from tiles or glas. You just shouldn't smear it apart with the fingers. Anyway interesting to see how far creativity goes. What's next? USB powered self-warming food?

Ha! I saw these hooks at bangood and hoped you would take one to bits. Say what are the two little deli slices of hot glue for? Maybe I missed it.

Aaron Nadler

It does look suspiciously like a hook themed DVR video recorder.

Big Clive

Isopropyl alcohol does release hot melt glue from most smooth surfaces. It doesn't really melt it or dissolve it that I've seen, but it does affect its ability to grip (so maybe it does dissolve a little at the surface?)

SMD codes link its a PDF. <a href="http://caxapa.ru/thumbs/588912/smd-codes.pdf" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">http://caxapa.ru/thumbs/588912/smd-codes.pdf</a> I hope this is useful.

Nuts 'n' Proud

If I saw that in a hotel room I would think it was some type clandestine listening device or some type of hidden storage dead drop. Certainly not that!

Lostngone

The clue that it's a messy removal job should have been the spare glue.. another cracking video Clive thank you
