2018-09-23 04:39:51 +0000 UTCTrick or Treat almost certainly originated with "Mumming" (or Guising in Scotland) where you went door-to-door in costume, performing a song/dance/poem or whatever, hoping for a reward That means it not only didn't originate in the USA, it predates the place entirely by several centuries! :) Guy Fawkes Night (November 5th) overtook Halloween for a long time in the UK but I think it's a BIT anarchistic for capitalist types so they've marketted Halloween back to the fore - more shit to sell to the proles etc. etc.
2018-09-23 03:02:52 +0000 UTCMany years ago when I did theater tech at the community college where I grew up, we had these things with scenery cut out of thin stainless steel sheets that were then put in front of a very bright light to project basic sketches of things like gas street lamps, trees, etc on the background. I'm betting it was a similar effect. Mostly what I remember is that the steel sheets got *incredibly* hot, so in addition to trying to not slice your fingers open on the razor-sharp edges, you ran the risk of being branded with the outline of a tree or a cactus or something when you swapped them out. <.>
