Deliberately shimmery neon lamp. It worked out well.

Now I'm feeling a bit better I'm getting back into projects again.  Starting with another neon based one.

https://youtu.be/BWu_1RPYkBo

The project is based on an existing LED lamp supplied as a kit without LEDs.  Instead of using the original PCB and circuitry I designed a new one to support 9 neon indicator lamps in a star under the clear dome.

In a way it's similar to the nixie lamp project, but much simpler and brighter with more control over the soft shimmer as opposed to the original flickery nixie lamp version.

If you like the colour of neon then you can just use this as a large neon lamp.  The lifespan should be in the 10's of thousands of hours.

I had another test tube here and was pondering the idea of a neon array inside. I guess you used local resistors to each neon and just too care to keep the live and neutral apart?

Big Clive

I bought some test tubes a while ago to make an LED lamps, but after this video I decided to pick you some neons and make something even better! https://www.instagram.com/p/BzKLtKDHsgC/

Best intro ever!

Chalk and cheese means things that are superficially alike but very different in substance.

Nuts 'n' Proud

It sounded like you said "chalk and cheese". If I heard right, what does it mean? I could understand the cheese part but not why chalk would be good.

I was feeling depressed until I saw Clive "do" his fingernails. Thanks Clive.

Am glad you're on the mend, Clive!

Loscha

Glad you're feeling better, Clive! I really want to build a neon project, and I've got a bag of them. I don't know what I want to make just yet.

Michael Thompson

I got inspired. Might try what the performance is of a 50 k resistor, 50 k lin pot and two neon lamps in series. The pot to finetune the shimmering depending on your mains voltage of 230 - 240 Volt.

I love the intro mate, great job Clive

You mentioned the tiny welder which arrived with a customs charge (I hate that - last time it happened to me the additional Royal Mail charge was outrageous) - I had come across this tiny tool for the first time earlier in the day. At the time I wondered how I could get you to look into the thing, because the case appears to be metal, yet the mains lead is only two core. Couldn't see a double insulated symbol, and of course the description didn't mention it. I hope you will feature a teardown sometime! Wonder if its indicator light flickers...

Interesting that the same wine tasted good in France but awful when you got back to the UK. It is possible that 'they' deliberately choose the rubbish to send to us, or maybe it simply tastes better in the 'correct environment'. We used to buy French apples, which tasted of nothing; we had to eat fruit, and just assumed the French tolerated tasteless apples. When we happened to buy the same thing in France (I think it was 'Golden Delicious') the taste was amazing. I was certain 'they' had created a special taste testing machine which automatically flicked the good ones along one channel for France and the 'beyond bland' ones across the Channel for us. Oh by the way - liked the flickering lights!

When you did the camera brightness compared to the brightness that you see ( time 23.40) How does that look to you after the video is uploaded ? I do know that YT can mess with the brightness having heard a few comments about Skyrim games making the dungeons even darker. I have often wondered about some sort of playing card / "test card" that every one would have so when you look at your screen you could get a better idea of colour and contrast ? Funny bit, while working as a developer in 1996 for a e-commerce WWW site, in my capacity as a "one man band" looking after the web server, Oracle database and the site content my manager thought the colours needed a bit of a change to make them brighter, I had explained many times before that CRT monitors will look different for all our customers. But she wanted me to change the colour schema again !!! So I said give me half a day and I will alter the colour codes in all the HTML files ;-)) Just before I called her back I altered my contrast and brightness on my VDU and said "how is that " - "much better" she said. Sad days John

To the camera it really looks like mixture little flames. Very good result in deed.

the first few mins of soldering the resistors on I just had to take your word that you were soldering because it was very hard to see the pcb.

Amazing! Look at the HOPI. From 29:32 to 29:35 the HOPI doesn't flicker. Interesting that the exposure that enhances the shimmer of the neons smooths out the HOPI.
