Smell the bass.

This little rechargeable JBL speaker and its non-matching melted power supply were sent in by Leo.

The question is...  Which failed first.

Smell the bass.

I too got "stinky fish" from the title.

Gallium nitride? I'd normally associate that with blue/white LED technology. I've not knowingly come across power supplies that use that technology in the switching components.

Big Clive

Hey, BC, have you taken apart any gallium nitride power supplies? How are they different?

Excellent, more reviews and tear-downs of exploderized electronics please!

Just buy a branded unit from a prominent high street name. That could include IKEA, ASDA and many others that need to protect their brand's reputation.

Big Clive

My current preference is an IKEA charger, but any unit bought directly from a prominent brand will have to be compliant to protect that brand's reputation. Even ASDA or Walmart are options since they need to protect their name.

So what is a decent power supply? I use the Apple 1 amp cube and Apple 2.4 amp units and the IKEA Koppola 3 port 3400 mA chargers. They all seem to run cool.

A Little different from your usual fare, but would you consider doing a design and build of your own USB (or generic/multi voltage) power supply and/or "dream" lithium Power pack? I'd like to see what a pro would come up with designing something useful from scratch.

Some of those cheap USB supplies terrify me. Probably why I hang on to every Apple phone charger I've ever owned, because Apple would never risk your life, they want you alive to buy More Stuff

I grew up thinking that Trading Standards et al (in the UK) were going to protect me from such products. How naive. Obviously my posty doesn't call in to their offices before delivering my Far Eastern purchases! That phone case going live is new to me and very disturbing. I do have one of those plastic covers - how good am I - but I can tell you that the floor below Ely Cathedral's (amazing) lantern hasn't got the message. Surprisingly I was able to continue snapping away despite the broken screen. So, BigClive - how can we tell that a particular charging device is safe? (Other than looking for melting plastic). Thanks for another eye-opener BTW.

When I got the notification, I assumed this video was about the fish. 😏
