Analysis and flame test on a PIR ceiling light.

This light was sent for our exploration by Miek in Florida.  It's a very common eBay ceiling light with PIR sensor and it appears that the same style of light is also being sold in the UK by a prominent seller, albeit with different internals.

It works, but the yellow wire is definitely not an earth wire.

The trouble is that none of you have been to a chinese school..... They all sing the morning song together without fail. I think it goes something like this.......... He who would valiant be, ′Gainst all disaster, Let him in ohms to be, Follow the master. There’s no discouragement Shall make him touch the red. His first avowed intent... To be an earth rod ! ! !

re the turning on and off as soon as it is given power, I have a Philips dusk/dawn bulb which does the same thing https://www.philips.ie/c-p/8718696739402/led-bulb Assumed that as the light itself was so close to the light sensor that it was the light trying to detect real ambient light levels vs the light being emitted by the bulb itself (if that makes sense). Notably it does not exhibit the same behavior during normal daylight, just from dusk onward.

The 2nd burnt plastic looks a bit like marshmallows...I want marshmallows now

Moulded image to make the case look like a more expensive style that doesn't just have a loose circuit board rattling around inside.

Are those fake screws on the driver case part of the moulding or are they actual screws?

The flicker of the HOPI is not noticable with a higher exposure.

Is it odd that the thing I noticed the most is the HOPI stopped strobing when the light washed out the camera view?

Hi Clive, great tear down, I think the “non earth” yellow is the manual override, since it is connected via the normally closed contact to the driver connected to the common, if it is a dimmable driver, you could have a reduced voltage input on the yellow so that the lights go full bright when they are triggered and reduced output in standby.
