Books that matter.

I've not got a huge collection of books these days.  Literally just a smattering of technical manuals relating to specific areas of my work.

This is a guide to what I regard as technical "bibles" relating to specific industries.

The interesting thing is that some of the books are very old, but still available because they encompass the entire technical history of an industry in a manner that makes them very future-proof.

Books that matter.

Still have this one on the shelf from a prior life playing around with sound: The Yamaha Sound Reinforcement Handbook. Handy when you have to remind yourself "exactly what do decibels mean?" and other nuggets. Lots of charts and data. https://www.amazon.com/Sound-Reinforcement-Handbook-Gary-Davis/dp/0881889008

These days I'd just type a chip number into Google to find its pinout and datasheet.

Don't forget the TTL and CMOS Cookbooks!

I'd say ISO9001 is a bloated mess that is making life very easy for the Chinese manufacturers who enjoy the competitive advantage offered by not giving a shit about ISO9001.

Oh John Huntington, Have not so fond memories of trying to get to grips with midshow control and just dusted off the 3rd edition of Control Systems for live entertainment. Ending up staying with my Fire One System.......

Clive what do you think about ISO9001? I was involved with my company's ISO team for a short while and found the thing to be almost impossible to read or understand. What was worse is the gentleman running the program expected one to know them verbatim. (This in a company that gets boned up to pass the audit as opposed to utilizing the standard to guide their process all the time.) I haven't bowed out of anything at work except for "doing ISO", and I haven't regretted it one tiny bit as i see it as a dog and pony show. That being the case, I'm the guy who seems to be picked for auditing because I know the answers they are looking for! Go figure that one huh? No matter, it looks good for my team and keeps the show moving along to...elsewhere.

My brother worked at a (sadly now closed) steel mill, and much of their networking was done with fiber optic, as the arc furnace tended to make a bit of electrical noise. Unrelated, but my personal favorite memory was exploring deep within the building, which was built in the early 20's. There was much left untouched from many many decades ago. A desk had paperwork in it from 1935.

Books are essential! I use them for my amateur radio stuff. The older the better I love them

Interesting name, Harry C. Box. Yes, I am less mature than most 9-year-olds.

Agreed - I thought this was a call to action about some issue in the publishing industry!

Great vid. Very interesting. So much fake neon around now. I have seen some online but not sure I would trust it arriving intact through the postal service. Also agree with your sentiment re the tutor knowing his stuff, it makes a training course so much better as you can talk about things not in the course documentation.

John Russell

I think a better title for this video would be "Technical bibles of showbiz."
