Tiny electric fireplace effect.

Now that the bulk of the heavy work is done on the show we're currently loading in, I can get back to making videos.  I'm currently making them in the accommodation provided by the job, so things will look and sound different for a while.  As much as I'd like to use the big glossy pictures of tiny circuit boards to trace through the circuits, the lack of a printer here makes that tricky.

On a plus note, the local shops have some intriguing electronic tat.  Like this little fireplace lantern.

Was that a an AC adapter plug on the bottom?

I think that adding a couple of red flicker LED's to it and something to change the motor speed randomly would give it an even more realistic look. I don't think I would want one with a real log fire though...... May make your fingers a wee bit toasty :-D Very strange product indeed.

would have been interesting to see the effect with plastic logs removed but with the translucent colour plastic pane back in place. you could build a nice collection of different colour ones without the plastic logs just using different colour translucent panes. never the less a nice video all the same

I was in a local Sainsburys, but didn't spot that.

Hey Clive, a quick note if you're looking for bargains and something to take apart: my local Sainsburys (and I guess others too) are selling off some of their more esoteric LED lights. I bought a load of 806 lumen R7 format corncob-like lights for 75p each! The holders cost more than that.

It's not that different to some of the full size versions, there are variants but this type of design was popular in the past. More modern versions had felt strips blown by a cylinder fan to give the flame effect, the most modern models use water vaporised by a piezo to enhance the effect.

The Tinkering Shed

This reminds me of another classic fire effect... when you put an incandescent lamp in series with a fluorescent tube starter to make it flicker.

Sorry, mine does have the 3 LEDs. It's more rectangular front so I guess it needs it to fill the effect. Mine was from B&M

I have a similar one, and I took it a part. The log effect at the front had slipped up and looked horrible. It actually looks really good in the dark
