Tasting a meat free burger.

Not a normal video for this channel, and probably not being released on YouTube.

My co-worker Steve got me to try a meat-free burger to see how it compared to the real thing.

I think vegetarian food like this is good for an alternative to meat / fish. I try and have at least one vegetarian meal a week. Vegetarian food has come along way since the original vegetables burgers I remember trying to cook on the bar-b-cue which all fell apart.

John Russell

The food videos are a good side to the normal, like the MRE's, we need more of them.

Cannot post a pic, but the link shows nutrition between Impossible vs Beyond https://www.quickanddirtytips.com/health-fitness/healthy-eating/know-your-nutrients/is-the-beyond-burger-healthy-for-you

Once you put all the things in ground beef that you use to make a hamburger, and then load on the condiments, the 'flavor' of the beef isn't quite so relevant anymore. A big slab of grilled, greasy protein with spices and condiments? Good enough. That said, Beyond squicks me out just a little because the meaty texture is just not a thing I care for anymore. I'm vegan 8 years, vegetarian 22 years before that. I'd rather have a hemp & bean patty loaded with spices and vegetables. But hey, if this helps anybody convert, even part-time, I guess that's a win.

George Dorn

Yeah. They're growing sheets of meat in a nutrient solution. I think it's got a while to go yet though.

No symptoms of 'Clive-itis' for me with this one I'm afraid. Perhaps a postprandial bundaberg ginger beer and an after eight mint would've helped!

Phil in the kitchen

Interesting. Does that mean the only meat you eat is blue rare steak? Or why would that be the only thing you'd consider a vegan option for?

I have the same "neon" flamingo as in the background, and it comes with me on all of my trips, usually placed in the hotel window. It's not as fun in a tropical place such as Florida or Panama, but it properly sticks out in rural Alaska or Canada.

cow eats grass i eat cow so does that count. :) i tried a veggie burger prolly 10 years ago. wasnt very good however i bet they have come along way since then maybe ill try one just to try. Did i hear you right sir Clive did you say they are lab growing beef ? We are done moving now i got to put stuff away then my ( no one in the house will be allowed to touch just look at my BigClive coaster) will be assembled. Cheers.

Show me a fake blue rare steak that's convincing & I'll consider it...

I did the Vegan January thing, I found those burgers just taste like the cheapest of the meat versions.

mikenco

It is a bit pricey, but only because it's new.

There's a huge difference between natural meat and the processed stuff. The Isle of Man is very rural, so there's plenty of real meat on the shelves of the supermarkets.

Big Clive

They have them here in Pennsylvania at Burger King. I'm going to try one.

The resource impacts of meat, especially beef are just mind blowing, then there is the enviro impact.

The Tinkering Shed

I have been really curious about the Beyond and Impossible burgers. Some of the fast food (Burger King and some hipster places) have started serving them. I'm all in if it means a good tasting burger but I also like some of the black bean burger patties around. I'm an easy convert with all the options available here. edit: I enjoy hunting whitetail deer on our family land in TX. I will always enjoy that meat more than something store bought.

Also, tell Steve to try the Vivera chicken pieces, they only seem to be available from Sainsbury's, they are very realistic, indistinguishable from the real thing especially in a curry or with mayo etc.

The Tinkering Shed

Been meat free for over 4 years now, there are loads of great meat free foods out there and not all cost more than the meat options. Would love to see you do a series of meat free taste test videos.

The Tinkering Shed

These are pretty good but the real bee's knees are the Impossible Burgers. Same basic concept as Beyond, they just pull it off better. Currently only in (some) restaurants but even just with the patty they are undistinguishable. Give them a go for sure if you ever see them on the menu. All of these do require a fair bit of vegetable inputs but nothing at all compared to beef, which is just off the charts from a resource perspective to raise. I love me a burger so wherever either of these are options I tend to opt for them, just not much of (if any) a compromise.

Nicolas Pottier

I pick up those from time to time, to have something different, and I am an omnivore. They're not bad at all.

Howard Simons

@tez: it is the Beyond Burger from Beyond Meat. Clive hit in on the head: if you are not told in advance and it is in a bun with some condiments, you would most probably not notice. It is is not cheap (yet), but as a meat eater this is the best argument (yet ;-)) that you don’t really need beef.

Daniel Schneller

Fiver for 2! Its a no from me

Clive can you tell me the product name in here please?

I like meat free Clive. Not Veggietarian but no meat 3 days a week.
