I'll have more time to make proper videos now, since the show (The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo) is now running. After the initial load-in of all the lighting equipment - we have to weed out the lights that came directly from other shows with pre-existing faults, some of which only show up under working conditions. (Mainly heat.)
Once we are familiar with the show sequence and our cues within that sequence, it all becomes a lot easier and we settle into our usual skewed working hours. (I'm typing this at 5.05am.)
This year my main tasks are the powering up and placement of lighting equipment, routine charging of 48 RF controlled rechargeable light sticks (Titan tubes) and their issuing to dancers in strict numerical order. Monitoring them as they make their stage entrance, then collecting them again to fit to a mobile round stage, while my coworkers clip half of them to the arena barriers mid-show.
Then it's up to the tech room for tea, cookies and cable/equipment repairs before we have to monitor the use of the mobile illuminated podium for the rest of the show. Then we retrieve all the Titan tubes for charging overnight.
While doing this we are also on continuous call to respond to lighting, effects, hydraulic, power and pyrotechnic equipment failures in the system.
