Flapping solar ornament.

I may re-record this video (again) since I was struggling to get enough time to make it properly.  It may sound a bit rushed as I was having to head to work right after recording it.

It's a glimpse at how the humble solar flapper/rocker ornaments are derived from vintage electronic timekeeping technology.

It's similar, but usually just fires bursts of pulses to the flame. I'm not sure if they actually respond to the presence of the magnet. They seem to evolve the design every few years though.

I think it's human nature to be attracted to moving ornaments.

The worst thing about solar fappers is when the sun goes down.

I assume some variation is used in electric LED "Candles"?

Phil Collins

Sounded good to me Clive, no need to re-do it in my opinion

I've had a few of them. Used to put them on the dashboard of the car. But the Florida heat necessitates using those reflective windshield covers, so the daily putting up and taking down of those things, has destroyed them all. Some are particularly fragile, and once broken, nearly impossible to put together (for me, too complicated to care fixing a $5 flappything)

My mum had a substantial collection of these "kinetic art " items with multiple duplicates possible as a result of Alzheimer's. All lined up at the parlour window. The video is fine and confirms my long held view that there aren't many "user serviceable" parts inside and a trip to Poundland is easier. I have started my own collection. Along with other kinetic things like the drinking bird. Yes I have had my genes checked.

Demolished Man

No need for a re do, Clive. I'm interested! Down the rabbit hole indeed!

It probably says a lot about me that I misread the title as fapping! 🤔

Great video Clive, no need to redo it. fascinating..

I don't feel that it needs recording. I like the slightly increased pace and more focused style.

Thank you so much for this video... I have had for years a Japanese Beckoning Cat (not unlike the one that Kane had mentioned above) that a friend sent me. It is very cute and is solar powered to move its arm and head back and forth. However, just my luck, it never worked properly unless it was in direct, intense light. With your knowledge passed on through this video, I have a better direction as how to get it moving again. (I know, I know, they are probably a dime a dozen, but this particular one was from a good friend and a new one wouldn’t have the same sentimental meaning...) Cheers!

I had a pendulum and magnet set as a child but I don't remember the name.

Rob Clark

Cheers boss, always wondered how these work.

Neil Tonks

I know it'll be almost exactly the same but I'd like to see inside a lucky cat.
