Media hysteria and vaping.

Most of you will be aware of the current media frenzy surrounding a sudden surge of lung issues and deaths caused by "vaping".

These all seem to be related to the use of a cannabis product where the oil/wax/resin based extract has been mixed with a solvent to allow it to be inhaled.

It has nothing whatsoever to do with traditional vaping as is being implied by some of the less intelligent media outlets.

This video is to address this issue and try to stop people switching back to traditional cigarettes.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jwrPfE8qJRw

At this point in time it is believed that vaping is infinitely safer than traditional smoking, which claims about 480,000 lives each year in the USA alone.

Do you guys think this video is acceptable?  I don't want to promote either smoking or vaping, but do want people to know the facts surrounding the current situation.

Media hysteria and vaping.

I think when Kids really want smoke e-cigarettes, they do! With or without flavour. It's like smoking normal Cigarettes, they don't taste good at all. But I agree your opinion with the unknown chemicals in the flavours. It should been regulated. But not the "Strawberry" taste, because then they really do it because its Illegal and you could mix the flavours by yourself which could be really harmful.

I want to make that the name of my band!

Michael Thompson

well you have to mix 'em right

Michael Thompson

Nicely put together video, anything that gets people off cigarettes has to be good. I lost my Mum to 2 smoking related cancers, so I may have a bias. "Hazing the monkey room" Is now my favourite euphemism, I will be trying to come up with a definition all day now :)

Phil Collins

So we shouldn't vape gasoline or sulphuric acid.

Mark Trombley

I don’t smoke and I don’t vape. Given the choice I’d ban smoking now, but vaping is a different thing as it’s much less harmful. Overall I think you walk the line well and the Video could be made public. There will be those who complain about it, but I hope more people will simply be better informed as a result.

Adam Pepper

I feel it establishes the common ground with viewers who might currently be of an anti vape mindset. If you do that up front they could be more receptive to watching the body of video with an open mind

”This video is to address this issue and try to stop people switching back to traditional cigarettes." --- this point cannot be overemphasized. I would suggest considering starting the video with a title card to that effect and possibly a voice over

Passive smoking with vaping devices is comparable to the haze in a nightclub or theatre. It's not known to have any issues other than the slight annoyance at some of the fruity aromas.

Big Clive

Sounds like the same way Skoal handed out tobacco pouches to primary school kids in the UK before they were closed down as a result.

Big Clive

I think the greater "satisfaction" (as the cigarette industry like to call it) could help with the switch to vaping.

I would also point out that some people when trying to quit tobacco don't want a tobacco-flavored vape as it actually stimulates their cravings. Thus, getting rid of the minty/fruity flavors does - for some - reduce the utility in getting away from actual smoking. The whole fake THC cartridge thing has been a problem for some time; it's just that now some bozo(s) have cut their distillate with something actually dangerous. Cannabinoids are readily absorbed by the lungs - that's why smoking gets you high - as are the terpenes that give various strains their different flavors. Quality cartridges have nothing else in them - but the problem is that there's whole ranges of packaging available from Chinese sources so one never knows who's behind a particular batch of these things - or what's IN them. One of the most informative videos on the subject I'm aware of seems to have been pulled from YouTube because of BS, so here's a copy: https://www24.zippyshare.com/v/OITVS2sl/file.html Update: My bad, apparently the video above has been restored on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9F2b-UyG5Jw The point is that any *real* brand name THC vape in a legal state with testing is probably safe. I'm not going to name "good" brands because they'll vary from state to state - but they're NOT ripping off characters like Mario, the brands of fashion companies or even breakfast cereals. In short - I think the bit at the end of the video where you start talking about THC vapes is ... somewhat misinformed. The problem isn't vaping THC, it's vaping garbage THC carts that have had the THC distillate cut with something that should never be vaped. How do I know? Vaping is essentially a more portable version of a cannabis consumption method called DABBING where a concentrated extract is applied to a hot surface, it vaporizes and is inhaled. There are videos on YouTube of people doing truly ENORMOUS dabs with no ill effects other than being stupendously stoned.

Thanks for the good info Clive. The mainstream media rarely does give us the whole story. In the US they often lie as well.

As someone who does vape cannabis, the problem seems to be what I call "Dog Piss Cartridges" - the kind sold in states where cannabis is still illegal, or in dodgy unlicensed "dispensaries". Often these are using a stolen brand name that would NEVER be in the cannabis business. All the packaging and such are available to buy through various Chinese sources like AliBaba, and thus the cartridges get filled with who KNOWS what and can vary widely depending on who decided to make a batch of these things. This has been an ongoing problem - and yeah, I do run into brain-dead people who actually think "Mario Carts" is somehow a legitimate brand. (As if Nintendo would EVER license one of their most iconic characters for something not-kid-friendly.) It's just that now some bozo has decided to cut the THC distillate with something that's actually dangerous to inhale in the short term.

While I agree vaping is much better than traditional smoking, I wouldn't say it's "infinitely safer". The BBC Horizon series did an episode in 2016 called "e-Cigarettes: Miracle or Menace?" which was very informative, and one big issue they uncovered was (as mentioned) the flavourings, which were generally not tested to ensure they were safe. It seems that the liquids are made from ingredients that are food safe, but many of them have not been tested to ensure they are also safe to inhale. When eaten, stomach acid breaks down some of the components in the substance and the leftovers are safe to enter the bloodstream, however when inhaling the same substance, everything makes it into the bloodstream including those components that are harmful. So I think it is very important to find out what all the ingredients are in the liquid you are planning to use, and check that they are all known to be safe to inhale.

Clive, thoughts on nicotine "Saltz". The community seems split on this, but Ive had great sucess getting friends off ciggs starting them on high mg nic salt juice then weaning them down to freebase levels then off completely. What are your thoughts on these high mg salt juices?

Mike Bradley

In the end the only "healthy" option is to not smoke at all. I think vaping should be used as a means to ultimately wean people off of smoking altogether, not as a "healthier" replacement. But yeah, anyone doing even a cursory search can see it's specifically with THC-related vape juice, not fucking vaporizers in general.

Randi Tastix

It may be worth changing from 'vaping is safe' to 'vaping is far safer than cigarettes' simply because people may say 'if it's safe why shouldn't kids do it'. As you've said flavours are unknowns, but so are bad units, or issues with lower volumes or voltages that have been linked higher up. and if something does go wrong (even in accident) it's still your lungs that are going to be damaged. Also anyone know if the 'passive smoking' type effects are as present with vaping as they are with smoking?

Russell Peake

I think it's great information, and definitely agree that vaping is preferable to smoking and that not doing either is better still. A little re-jig or adding a summary at the beginning would be beneficial I think, something to say not to start vaping if you don't smoke already, but that vaping is much better than smoking!

Richard Robinson

Facts are always welcome.

René Pasold

I say publish it but add a short disclaimer at the start, the usual 'personal opinion, not a recommendation, not to be considered advice' type thing.

The Tinkering Shed

That said, under typical vape temperatures this isn't a concern. But a lot of pens are pretty shitty; if you try to vape with a nearly-empty cartridge or a pen that's been laying on its side, you get a pretty nasty hit. I'm guessing this is from the wick only being half-wet and the coil hitting a really high temperature as a result.

George Dorn

I stopped using THC vapes. I was also worried about the solvents and such.

Michael Thompson

Curious about the risk, I looked into what THC and CBD oils are often thinned with to get them to wick properly. Apparently propylene glycol is a common choice, and there's some studies concerning oxidation by-products if it reaches too high a temperature and combusts instead of boils. I don't fully understand the chemistry involved, but there's some extensive discussion from maybe-reasonable people here: https://chemistry.stackexchange.com/questions/14771/how-does-propylene-glycol-glycerin-form-formaldehyde-acetaldehyde-when-vaporized

George Dorn

Great video, although you'll no doubt still attract a few naysayers of the type that think that everything "bad" should be banned regardless of the greater good (getting people off cigarettes) which you clearly explain. Unfortunately the media is always going to latch onto the worst case scenario, that's what gets views afterall.

I slipped, tripped & fell on “My Cucumber🥒”! No Dr. I wasn’t ramming “My Cucumber🥒” in & out of my ass and accidentally put it so far up my asshole that I lost 99% inside of me, I swear I slipped, tripped and landed bare assed on a magical Cucumber 🥒 that could stand up vertically unlike every other Cucumber which lays horizontally and then it just popped itself right into my Asshole!!!!!

Facts be good.

Having at one point handled a bottle of 36mg/g eliquid which was leaking I can testify to the unpleasantness of absorbing nicotine through your skin, I had a headache for a couple of days afterwards (not a smoker, never been a smoker)... As far as the video, it's valuable information but it is a bit of a thin line to walk :( 100% agree that if you're going to consume nicotine, vaping is infinitely preferable to tobacco cigarettes (and I'd much rather smell your sickly sweet vapor than actual cigarettes). There's recently been some controversy about Juul (I think) some ecigarette manufacturer in the states actually directly marketing to school children... Maybe adds some context?
