Fixing a dead LED street light lamp.

I was given a few LED retrofit SOX lamps at the recent Glasgow meet.

This one was faulty, so in this video I fix it.

Yeah, I recall pulling the PSU out of a Tandon (!) PC sometime in the 90’s and throwing the thing across the room because a capacitor on the rectifier output was charged to 450V or so...

Switch mode supplies have evolved significantly. Most are based around dedicated chips with minimal support components and are much less scary to work on than the very early ones.

Big Clive

That was a nice revision of switch mode theory for me -last time I learned that it was all thyristors and discrete components

Great video this time. Really enjoy the sleuthing out with circuit explanation.

Dealing with councils is lucrative. They don't really question costs, so the lamp cost would just be part of the story.

The capacitance value read lower (20uF) than the intended value (22uF) in a basic LCR type tester. The ESR showed as similar to the replacement which is odd. I expected it to be higher. It makes me wonder if it was a bit too critical about the capacitance value or if I resolved the issue by disturbing/reflowing a bad solder joint.

Big Clive

Wow! Those lamps are £62.45 inc VAT each!!

"Pinholes Files", probably! :)

Can you test/measure the failed capacitor?

MarcT

They all seem to light together, so I think it's just to add a wider splash of light.

Big Clive

I wouldn’t be surprised if that second LED lamp you turned on, has an “extra” feature! I noticed that there were 4 SMD LEDs mounted (one pair at both ends) without lenses, apart from a drop of silicone.

Bo Holbo Rasmussen

They also sell them as 'nut files' for guitar. Handy little things

Ah, I see you mention above that you have some of those hollow ones. The needles for clearing my desoldering station tips also have the crosshatch texture, which is quite effective

Ebay search: hollow desoldering needles

When you mentioned that all street lamp gadgets were interesting I thought: If I were stinking rich I'd send you a damaged lamp pole, just for fun :) Might not fit on the workbench for a teardown though.

Nani Isobel

At least they didn’t send you urethral sounds in place of desoldering needle’s...

Lostngone

Uh-oh. I bought the "desoldering needles" as for PCB through holes, but they do seem to be welding tip cleaners. That means I'll get literally hundreds of comments pointing that out when I make it public on YouTube. They do work for cleaning solder out of through holes though.

Big Clive

I guess they're sort of right as you could use them to file out the remaining solder after you've removed the component. I can't see it being that great at doing that though. A similar set is sold for welding torch tip cleaning https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/123902740782

Trevor

Ooh! Patreon doesn't like stuff in command brackets. Not that I expected them to have a gold star feature.

I've got a set of the hollow needles, but these are being sold as for PCB through holes. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/123391634772

Big Clive

Those aren't desoldering needles. They're welding torch tip files. The desoldering needles are smooth like you were expecting and hollow.

Trevor

Thanks Clive. What a great way to wake up... Email announcing a Big Clive video. (Do I get a gold star for the first comment...?)
