Samsung retrofit LED tube for existing ballast.

This video turned out a bit longer than expected.

It rambles a bit because the circuitry is nothing like I was expecting.  There's a really weird bit that I think is for protecting against power up/down stability issues.

The screening pcb was probably added as an afterthought when it failed initial EMC testing..

You forgot to mention that when the starter cools, the electrodes separate, breaking the circuit, you then get a high voltage spike from the inductor which wants to keep current flowing. The voltage spike causes the tube to strike, then the inductance of the ballast keeps the current to the proper value for the tube after the voltage across it has dropped to the running voltage.

Jonas Otter

It would probably keep the tube heaters running.

If someone put a fluorescent back in after the fuse "starter" was put in would it blow the fuse , or continuously heat the heaters in the tubes?

They have reverted the decision now because enough people kicked off about it.

Wonder if you registered bigclivedotcom as a business and linked it to your YT account, would you be able to keep your verification?

John Carr

No suitable fitting and ballast.

Big Clive

I tried cramming circuitry in both ends... it didn't end well.

420 is a police code from the 70's or so dealing with weed.

Ah.. you didn't light it :(

Good grief. My world was a little shaken. Never heard BC say “not sure” so many times. I felt like I was slipping into a twilight zone. But it was an incredibly interesting investigation and just as I was getting very cocky about knowing the terminology and even understanding stuff I heard new ones that left me reeling! Im pretty sure China will get the same job done with a resistor and cap or two and a bridge rectifier! It’ll be crap of course but one quarter the price!

As I understand it, it was first a 'time to smoke' and the date thing came later a bit like 'may the fourth' kind of thing. Urban legend says it started with a group of teenagers who would rendezvous at 4:30pm to smoke after school.

Is the ST pin and 2nd mosfet going to stop it doing the blinky thing if it fails to start by letting the gate float high until the driver output pulls it down through C6 for long enough to counter the lift via R9? (Like your faulty led sodium replacement lamp was doing)

It appears it's a date for some sort of festival associated with herbaceous extracts.

Big Clive

It was really complex. I was almost disappointed when I saw what was inside.

Big Clive

4:20pm is allegedly the time to smoke your weed.

Dave Davies

That was really crammed full of parts. I’m sure newer ones are simpler and probably fail a lot sooner than that one.
