The problem(or at least one of their many) is that no matter what you say on your channel, it doesnt per say affect Youtubes bottom line as far as ads go. If you have 1 million subs and say half of them are offended by silly shit, you still would have 500,000 subs that were not, and watched the ads. Whereas someone with 5000 subs never said or did anything that YouCensor doesn't like, they still only have 5000 subs watching the ads. And that doesn't count the people such as I who pay for their Premium and thus get no ads. As always it is simple greed and censorship plain and simple. Not sure which is more important to them it seems to be a tossup. keep saying shitty as much as you like and we will keep watching and supporting. And while you are at it throw in some 'cunts" for us Americans. i always get a vicarious thrill since even tho I cuss like the trucker I am, I still stay away from the indiscriminate use of a few words like that except for rare times. Saves them for having more impact when I do use them. What I truly dont understand is my Alexa will not accept the word "bitch" no matter how I couch it.

FWIW, I'm an American and "shit" is a swear word in my mind. I actually think it might be more obscene in the US vs UK. Although I think it's bullshit that YT is demonetizing videos that have it in the title, I'm not terribly surprised either. I think the word "crappy" would probably pass the filter without issue. I suspect that in other English speaking countries, they use "shitty" the way we use "crappy".

I thought that Americans (sorry to generalise!) used that word all the time and it's considered normal/every day speech there? So YT should be used to it by now! unless someone in Buckingham Palace is secretly working for YT these days!! One is not amused...

When I worked around Ad Tech, I heard a lot about this kind of thing. Brands tend to spend a great deal of time, effort and money to avoid anything adult-oriented/age restricted/etc., in the hope it will keep them away from controversial content, since people seem to have the idea that ending up with an automated ad on content is endorsement of that content, which is of course, crazy. The way youtube does it might be less than great, but annoyingly it's what the advertisers say they want.

I'm reminded of South Park's "shitty" episode responding to the FCC going nuts over a single use of the word on live tv. One of their best! They had a counter going during the episode that would increment every time one of the characters said the word. 😂Guess I wouldn't find it on YouTube now. Of all the things going on in the world, YouTube decides this would be something to do do.

YouTube has a very odd system. If I mark my videos as age restricted it pretty much removes all adverts even though most of them are engineering adverts.

My initial guess is some employee did a bulk search of titles containing this keyword, but it looks like it affects any video contain these four letters. For example, I tried opening a fair number of YouTube videos containing "Matshita" in the title, which is a brand of DVD writers. I could not find one video that contains ads.

Before I even finished reading your writeup, I too thought of our dear friend Simone. She does have a company that sanitizes her work, I believe for Swedish children's television. But for YouTube, I would think that most advertisers would welcome a bit of earthy language here and there. YouTube would better serve their advertisers and customers if they only limited advertising on videos aimed specifically at children. And as far as I can see, you are not aiming your videos specifically at children. Having said that, I am reminded that a year ago I said that I thought you would make an excellent teacher. If I had you as my junior high school electric shop teacher, maybe my crystal radio would have eventually worked and maybe I would be in an electronics profession today...

I agree that YT is very much becoming like broadcast TV in the watering-down of the content and "bad word" censorship. I assume it is driven by the advertisers that are the same in both. The advertisers are switching away from broadcast TV as it dies and streaming takes over. They want the same "safe" place to advertise that they are used to.

YT could surly bring in an age restriction feature. I'm sure some of the vids I've seen have been with a warning about the content. Anything with some slightly salty language or content in it gets a rating. Just like in the cinema. Couldn't it be that simple?

Dave Jones has had a few of his videos demonetized due to the use of "bullshit" in the title. So maybe it's "shit" that is triggering their filters. But apparently the automatic subtitles are also getting cleansed of the swear words as well.
