Isle of Man flooding.

A few people have asked if I've been affected by the flooding on the Isle of Man.

Fortunately I've not, although the main flood area in Laxey is on the road where my grandparents used to live, and where I spent many summer holidays.  I'd guess that house may have seen a bit of flooding.

The flooding was caused by a damaged wall and blockage of an old sluice gate with fallen trees.  Laxey is in a valley and sees a lot of rain water from places like Snaefell mountain.  Having played in that river many times as a kid I was surprised just how high it got.

We deliberately chose a place with modest shelter from storms and high enough to avoid flooding.  It's also a bungalow for easier roof maintenance and detached so I can blow stuff up in peace.

We've had a few effects including a landslide on the mountain road.

After all the hype over Lorenzo's wind warnings, one thing they didn't give much warning to was its rain. Thursday turned out to be just a typical blustery day here, however, this morning I woke up to see a large black section on the hill across from our house, i.e. a land slide from the very heavy overnight rain. Our local village Kilcar was on the RTÉ News showing its football pitch and the surrounding areas as a lake which I never seen before. Our garage floor was flooded, so currently have a portable AC in 'Dry' mode filling buckets until the concrete dries up. No damage (yet) as we keep most stuff on shelves after it previously got flooded.

Glad to hear you are high and dry with your recent flooding

Hope you are okay Clive. I wasn't aware of your weather woes.

Michael Thompson

Stay safe my friend.

Rocco Rizzo

Good to hear that you are safe. Thx for the post.

Shaun Runham

Clive folk are gonna turn up to your door if you describe your humble abode much more!

CheesyChickenGran

Stay safe and well my friend.

Glad to hear you're doing all right.

Brendan Meteer

PS. hunker down as the remains of Lorenzo are due Thu/Fri.

Demolished Man

A bit of irony, but we visited the IoM in late April for a week and didn't see a drop of rain. Staying in Douglas, our first "tourist attraction" was the Laxey Wheel which I recommend as a wonderful piece of engineering. When I heard about the storm I had an instant image of the Laxey Wheel revolving faster than its design parameters (with accompanying squeaks) and eventually making a bid for freedom down the valley and out to sea.

Demolished Man

Sounds bloody horrible, keep your head above water!

I blame Kev for saying you hadn't had a storm for a while on the livestream the other night

Glad you're safe man.

Good to hear you are safe and in one piece. Keep blowing things up in order to balance out the storm :)

Frank

Glad to hear you're ok, but please don't tell me the Laxey Diner might be no more!! They do (/did!) the best tourist breakfast outside of Harbour Lights!!

If you are lucky, she's the one blowing things up.

Take care with Lorenzo. Looks like it could hit Ireland and turn right and IOM is in the line of fire. We are doing some small prep here in Donegal....just in case. Fingers crossed it'll be no more than a barmans fart by the time it hits land.

"...detached so I can blow stuff up in peace..." - try explaining this to one's wife. She just doesn't understand!

hope hurricane Lorenzo misses the UK/Ireland area, its weakening a bit, but all these storms seem to pack an insane amount of rainfall

Good luck Clive, Ralfy, and the boys from the Manx Beard Club. My town survived significant flooding in 2008 and 2011. Very surreal. When I bought a house in 2009, I had a requirement that it be on a hill. I survived any major damage, but next time I will move to a town that *doesn't* locate all the power substations in designated flood plains. I don't suppose you have many options for living on hills on the Isle of Man.

Jeremy Impson

Glad to hear you're OK Clive
