Inside a big LED digital clock.

This is a test video for a different recording device.  A few people have mentioned that recent videos have not been playing on some devices and that usually hints at a recording app update glitch or a YouTube processing glitch.

Let me know what you think of the sound and picture.  Choosing a device that is suitable for recording in the way I do is always tricky as they always seem to fall flat in either the focussing or audio recording areas.  In this instance I'm trying out an old and slightly trashed Samsung S6.

The video is about a common eBay LED clock with a big chunky display.  Unlike many other eBay clocks it turns out that it's easy to use and really interesting inside.

I also made a video showing how to set this clock.  I kept it separate to protect the ordinary people from having to see the insides of their clock.

The temperature display is often implemented as a simple potential divider and an existing ADC in the microcontrollers. It then uses software to convert the reading to a temperature.

I had the thought that the bottom LED might be for a temperature display, 23.5° etc, would need a temperature probe, plenty of ADCs for it though!

There is a sound activated version, I ordered it when in Canada it arrived in the UK today. Coincidence that you did a review of one, over the years I have been getting various clock kits. Having seen you take it apart on mine there were 2 screws under the sticky front panel. Thanks for the tip. I thought it was faulty since the display kept going off after swapping powerbank I shouted at it and it came back on. Should have RTFM. Paragraph F: at the end It has Time, date, temperature, 3 Alarms, 3 display modes and powers save activated by 76dB The only issue was the jack plug was too long to fit in the recess for wall mounting. Hell it is BRIGHT green, I might have to tone it down a tad. Clive I will email you a link in case you are interested in ordering one. John

Thanks for this. I ordered one as a christmas present for my wife. Looks great.

It might be worth trying a new 32.768 kHz crystal in it.

I've had one of these clocks for a while, the biggest problem is that it gains time rather quickly. I went for the blue LED and even on the lowest intensity it's too bright for a bedroom, so I have it behind a sheet of dark tinted acrylic. I did open it up at one point to see if I cold add tinted material inside and it looked the same, it also took me a while to find that extra fixing behind the front panel.

Audio & Video are, and have been 5 by 5.

Video and sound quality are fine, viewed on a Samsung Galaxy S9

I loved my CAT S60, but didn't spring for the S61. Instead I got the Sonim XP8. Ultra rugged. Doesn't have the built in thermal camera, but can't beat the warranty and the battery life is great.

Thanks Clive. I thought the hole to the front could be for a sensor to dim the LEDs in the dark.

Nuts 'n' Proud

Looks and sounds great to me, I've never had any problems viewing your videos though.

The little screen could also be for a light sensor for auto day night switching

Could the third dot be a separator for a date display? Day.mnth for example. If the chip could do it

Demolished Man

Would a bit of stage lighting filter (gel) fit inside to change the colour? It would be easier than swapping the LEDs.

Looked and sounded good to me, it I haven’t had any issues with your videos anyway. Usually watch on an iPad.

Adam Pepper

Now i want to see the entire clock populated with those RGB LEDs with the Microchip onboard, so it becomes a flashy colored mess :D

Daniel Rotskas

No problem with sound or vision. I watch on PC

Are the pads next to the LED’s for different size of smd? I’ve not noticed any issues with your videos Clive but then I only watch on an iPhone so probably not a great benchmark.

Always nice to see you probing the colon.

I wonder how would Sony RX100 VII work for your purposes 🤔 It's a fairly expensive piece of tech, but does provide quite a package of features. Also not as hackable as Android, of course, and all in all just a random thought.

Purchased one just now. Black with orange LEDs (or probably just white LEDs with orange diffuser. Claims it shows temperature, don't believe it. I can't believe you didn't buy the pink one! 3D LED clock is what I searched for.

evilution

I got one of those for home and work, very legible right across the office! I changed the current limit resistor for the lowest dim setting as it was still a bit bright in a dark room.

The video looks and sound fine. As for the little window, some clocks with the same form do have remotes, so it's probably a "one mold fits all" situation.

looking good Clive. thanks for showing the clock , now I have to save up and get one.. lol
