Inside a Poundland Alexa portable power pod.

Poundland (Dealz on the Isle of Man) has these interesting units for £5 at the moment.  If you slip a suitable Amazon Echo device into them they allow it to be used as a portable device with power coming from a 10,000mAh rechargeable cell.

I'm trying a warmer colour temperature with the current recording device.  Let me know how it looks.

I started exploring this unit quite late at night (weekend) and the circuit board was very hard to trace out, so the video doesn't really show the amount of exploration that went on.  It was made harder by the fact that the PCB is a very expensive looking multi-layer one with a sneaky internal layer connecting various random points on the PCB.

The scavenged lithium cells are now under test.  It'll take a while if they're the claimed capacity.

A nice big steel wok ought to do the trick.

Explosion containment pie dish -or maybe a wok?

Yes, I'd suggest also checking the output voltage with a meter and not relying on the power supply's display. The current will depend on the size of cell. A typical small phone cell should handle 500mA. You can get very useful PCBs from eBay that take a USB phone charger plug and will limit the current and display charging status on LEDs, cutting off at the 4.2V mark.

It depends on how good the current limiting is. Some do it smoothly and some are a bit rough. I'm doing it right now with a protected 4x4 cell pack that has protection built in. I've set the voltage just a bit above full battery voltage and set the current to 2A (It's a high capacity pack.)

Just ordered a new power supply with CC and CV. Can I recharche a lipo with it? never done this before. I have two "disposable" lipo phone charger batteries (you know wich I mean :)), but have not the equipment to recharche them.

Hub Rijcks

also a sony owner here, would highly recommend them !

So I Wonder...Who If Anybody Lost Or Made Money On This Device? To Sell It So Cheap And It's Good Quality?

Have you considered getting a Sony phone for filming? You could get a used flagship like Xperia XZ Premium. Their price is super low today, but they are absolutely awesome phones still. I use one myself. And Sony has great, smooth running software, not utilizing the slowdown techniques of Samsung etc. And they keep updating the software on older phones far longer than many other brands.

Test complete, the two cells are just over 5000mAh each.

Big Clive

I'll be raiding my nearest Poundland tomorrow in the hopes of getting some of those cells, and also hope not too many of your Patreon subscribers are nearby to beat me to them!

I have to agree - it's a bit rich and needs cooling off a little.

Thanks for the video! In my local Poundland I found the equivalent Power Pack for Google Home Mini. Has also 2 flat 5,000mAh cells in it, but in parallel. Charged by an IP5306 chip, which can put out 2 amps into the batteries.

I have to say im not keen on the warmer colour tempetature. It looks a bit saturated to me.

It's used on the Isle of Man to compensate for the extra ferry charges when shipping stock across.

As I could answer this question without getting out of bed or moving 10km ( plug beside Alexa into bedside phone charger with ammeter): Idle not listening, 180ma. Idle, quiet room 250ma. Playing podcast at max volume 300ma. Echo dot. Current draw very spiky, and numbers approx.

Ian Stirling

Interesting piece of kit! Cheap too! Looking forward to the results. Do we know what current an Alexa draws, thus giving an idea how long this pack would actually last, say at a party?

Like the warm tint although already got the blue light filter cranked up on my phone!

I thought Dealz was the alias for poundland in areas that didn't use the pound? That's what it's called here in Ireland. Video looks a bit oversaturated in my opinion, but I'm watching on mobile so take that with a pinch of salt

Here are the 10,000 mAh batteries from that manufacturer on AliBaba, btw: https://dgyoufang.en.alibaba.com/search/product?SearchText=10000mah They're 9.8*66*113mm, so I'd expect something called 986655 to be half the capacity :)

I have to admit I found 16:24 to 16:55 a bit stressful, but luckily you sorted that one out :D

Sounds good, a little too warm or saturated but the quality is good

Richard Boyce

the light looks warmer and it also sounded like the audio was almost entirely through my center channel speaker

Michael Thompson

I bought a similar unit that also featured speakers for the dot. I ended up taking it to bits because it made a strange popping noise that reset my echo dot from time to time.

Michael Thompson

Clive you’re on fire, lad! YouTube canna take it, she’s goin ta blow!

Is it possible that the two outputs are thus: one is an output from the boost, providing 15v to the output from the 8.4v cells; the other is a controlled passthrough from the 15v input jack to the 15v output, which prevents the passthrough and boost voltages from combining, and perhaps balances the use of 15v input between charging and powering the device?

Jeremy Impson

I was in Poundland yesterday! Bugger

Neil Tonks

Saw one of these in Norwich, yesterday. However, it was a shorter version, with a claimed 8Ah battery. Still tempting.

Ooh, that looks interesting!
