Purple gothic LED star hack.

This video started off as a simple look at the inside of a common LED tree topper and then took a distinctly devious twist with the replacement of the LEDs with a purple string.

To finish it off I added a bare USB plug onto the end of a string of parallel LEDs with the plug and resistors potted into a solid block using hot melt glue and heatshrink sleeving.

It's really hard to go wrong Clive. Please continue! Do want to see that with slow color changers. They make everything grand.

I'm betting they have gotten many miles out of the mold for the internal plastic and it once held incandescent line (mains) voltage lights and added the hot glue later. Nice star dude!

You can get micro USB connectors mounted on a little breakout board for pennies. that way you can use a normal micro USB cable to have the battery pack as far away as you want. I use them in all my projects these days because there are always micro usb cables lying around.

Nice potting idea, I'll be using that in future. Merry Christmas!

Like your version far better than the original... B3 suggestion is also interesting.. A time delay so you can enjoy the purpleness then the brightness.. lol.. Merry Christmas Clive..

Yeah. I pondered adding another LED in for that position, but it would have to have exactly matched the other LEDs for proper current sharing.

Fill star with magnesium powder and an electric match. Nice and bright, briefly.

You missed out the centre LED! I’m guessing the purple set only had 20 LEDs? Still looks way better than the original though.

Nice, looks like a good project for the new year
