Quick update.

I just thought I'd drop in a short update video to show you guys what I was doing this evening.  A bottle of wine, ongoing adjustments to a DIY lava lamp while also writing a bit of machine code software (assembler) to run a series of test screens on the video wall panel out of the pink plastic handbag toy.

The video is just of the video wall panel.  Lava lamp will come later if it's a success.

Quick update.

I have the Adafruit RGB Matrix Featherwing and will be experimenting over the weekend. I may go on Show-n-Tell on Wednesday with it. So that get it even more coverage.

The price is currently around $15 from the low of at least $7.25 before the video went public. I expected sellout, but it seems like they have an awful lot of them in inventory. At $15 its still very cheap for just the panel.

I suppose it could be used for a flame panel effect with a proper randomiser and effect algorithms.

There's a lot of science involved. I've been trying to make a decent lava lamp for decades, and this is one of the best (safe) results yet.

The bare panel is extremely pleasing just to run your fingers across the connector contacts. Your body injects ambient mains hum into the inputs and causes the panel to display random pulsating colour stripes. All you need is a 4V or 5V supply to power it.

Any cheap white wine. Preferably carbonated in a sodastream.

Just like the Chinese sellers Amazon operates a demand based pricing system. Even different sizes of shoes or clothes will have different prices based on demand.

Ha, I just got my panel working on a raspberry pi.

Jeremy Impson

What wine do you recommend for watching vs. doing the build?

the price of these on Amazon jumped 4 dollars when the YT video went live :P

Dustin

Can we see the code you've written when you've finished your project? I wonder if you could use it to create a flame effect a bit like the flame effect lamps that you've taken apart in the past...

Personally, I'd love to see the lava lamp even if it doesn't turn out as planned. A lot can be learned from mishaps.

Super cool stuff! Looking forward to it all!

Have Fun writing that code :) I really like assembler! It's the programming language that i use the most when i work on something

BTW for anyone thinking of buying one of the ‘handbags’ to get a panel like this in the UK - have a look at Pimoroni.com (a UK seller of Adafruit stuff), who’re selling a ‘double’ 32x32 LED (6mm pitch) panel (albeit without the diffuser) for £18… which is cheaper than I’ve seen the handbags listed. (I’ve no commercial connection or anything - just thought I’d share the results of some googling…)

The occasional mini-update video can be quite enjoyable :)

I found them and was about to buy some. Then I remembered I have no clue how to write software/use the panels. It's one of those projects that will be very interesting to watch, but I think, will be beyond me. Look forward to seeing what you do.

And that's why I didn't get one. My abilities stop with stuff like this as I suck at the deeper stuff like this.

I actually just got 5 each of SIPO and PISO registers in the mail on Thursday. I probably should have gotten at least 10 each, but I can always just order more later. :D <a href="http://randomer.net/ee/shift-registers.jpg" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">http://randomer.net/ee/shift-registers.jpg</a> The PISO are for reading key presses and the SIPO are in case I want to do LED multiplexing at some point!

Coding with wine -- nicely done

Looking good! I just fitted the three I ordered on amazon today, and put the panels and PCBs away nicely. I have too many open projects right now, otherwise I’d be turning them into a small countdown clock. Soon, hopefully. (Though I’m likely to be lazy and just the libraries from adafruit on a pi.). Thanks again for pointing these out to us!

Clever Clive....
