Full clock kit build.

It's a while since I've built a kit.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BOgddrIXNkY

This kit is reported to have timekeeping issues, which is odd, since it uses a real time clock chip. I'll get a battery for it and test it.

The resistors are all 10K, so nothing to do with the display, which seems to be driven directly by the chip relying on output impedance to limit current. I'd guess the resistors are mainly for pull-up, transistor base and perhaps thermocouple bridge reasons.

The thermistor does seem to display a reasonably usable temperature display once it has settled to ambient temperature.

Best feature with this clock so far is that you can make it just display the time on its own.

Geekcreit make a few things as well.

Hey Clive, I wonder if you would consider putting together a list of recommended electronics kits? Looking at eBay seems to be a crapshoot (as in this case) and I've made everything they have at Spikenzielabs...

BigClive, you mentioned your TS-100 soldering iron. (Or soddering for the yanks.) I have noticed that there is a new version of the TS-100 out!

I build a clock kit (one of the ones with the 7 segment displays in the middle, and a ring of LEDs around the outside) about 2 months ago which has gained 6 minutes in that time. It's also got a real time clock chip in it, which saves the time when power is removed. Thought it might only be reading the RTC when powered on, but it seems to remember the wrong time as well.

Are you trolling for our ages? Oh wait you're joking, sorry.

You won’t live past 30 if you keep using that Lead based solder!!1!

these type of videos are my favorite...THANXsss

This looks very hackable. I keep thinking about leaving off the micro-controller provided and replacing it with some sort of adapter for something Arduino or ESP32. You know, if you could hook up an ESP32, it could pull NTP time and *always* be accurate. Or, accurate as long as it has wifi and internet connectivity. ;)

It makes an appearance at around 38:40 in this clock build video from early 2017.

I come here for the "Oh no! It's all gone horribly wrong!" I leave fulfilled.

Am I Deja-Vuing hard here, or did you build one of these before?? I've seen that chip lead former before.

If it comes on again with a minute value over 60, it would be interesting to see how high it counts. Around 20 years ago, my brother had a watch that somehow ended up with the minute in the 70s and after it counted to 99, it showed something like E0 and got stuck until he reset it.

Internet is full of stories about fake DS1307s (and fake RTCs in general), but some of that might just be crap PCB design. There are plenty of ways to make the real ones misbehave: https://www.maximintegrated.com/en/app-notes/index.mvp/id/58 (see the fast/slow clock sections for some ways to mess things up).

This ones going to have to wait till the weekend. Looking forward to it

Yeah builds are awesome! Fixes are better! Please do follow up on this one!

Excellent, love a kit build 🕰️

I love a nice, long, rambling kit build. 👍🏻

Whatever you are on, I want some... Love it.
