Stylish work light with interesting circuit.

There are two interesting things about this rather stylish combined work-light and power bank.

The first is the polarity protection and the second is the way they've nudged the voltage to allow the option of using two 18650 cells or four AA cells.  You can only recharge the 18650s in situ though.

I bought one of the single chip rectangular versions after watching this, it's a useful light but I've found that the battery cover comes of way too easily in your tool bag, need to put a screw in that or something. Other than that is actually very useable and extremely portable.

Seems they're unlabelled variants of some Caterpillar-branded work lights (<a href="http://catlights.com" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">http://catlights.com/</a>), especially the ultracheap ones sold by Costco. Or at least they're using the same/similar molds. Clive's looks like the 500-lumen 1600070 ($20 bucks for two) with better electronics, the one in Jason's link looks like the 1100-lumen 962841 ($30 for a rechargeable version, taken apart here: <a href="https://imgur.com/gallery/yc5NL" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://imgur.com/gallery/yc5NL</a>).

I'm just going to test that right now.... Not that much higher. 1.2A at full and 300mA at low.

UK store Home Bargains sell a version for £9.99 with only one round COB, it looks very similar otherwise. It takes 4x AA (included), not sure if that version takes 2x 18650 or has the USB charging/powerbank though. <a href="https://tinyurl.com/ybqbfu22" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://tinyurl.com/ybqbfu22</a>

The LED current must be a far bit higher with 6V of AAs vs ~4V of lithiums, even with the diode drop.

Light needs a moustache. And only one LED should blink :)

Moz in Oz

I spotted that one with the odd coloured surround on the lens, and the placement of the red/blue panel is about right.

In hindsight I could have doodled something. But as with most of these devices it's modular. A standard power bank circuit and then the classic anonymous chip with virtually no external components. The only oddities were two series diodes to drop the voltage from the AA cells and the refreshingly simple reverse polarity protection.

found this on ebay check out the other similar items below the advert <a href="https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Waterproof-Rechargeable-Flood-Light-Portable-Outdoor-Spotlights-COB-Work-Lights-/362469737963" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Waterproof-Rechargeable-Flood-Light-Portable-Outdoor-Spotlights-COB-Work-Lights-/362469737963</a>

Maybe that mysterious chip is what is used on this light to flash the beacon. <a href="https://www.banggood.com/30W-Portable-Rechargeable-COB-LED-Camping-Lantern-Work-Spot-Light-for-Hiking-Fishing-p-1235913.html?rmmds=detail-left-hotproducts__2&amp;cur_warehouse=CN" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.banggood.com/30W-Portable-Rechargeable-COB-LED-Camping-Lantern-Work-Spot-Light-for-Hiking-Fishing-p-1235913.html?rmmds=detail-left-hotproducts__2&amp;cur_warehouse=CN</a>

I went to AliExpress, searched “work lights” and there they were, first on the page, for USD 13.29. They must have a BC Patreon a/c so they know what Clive’s acolytes will be looking for!! Good video. The further you browse the cheaper (slightly) they get. There also seems to be some battery and charging variations. I saw a Russian feedback photo which showed 3X 18650 batteries Laying across the direction Clive had his 2 X 186750 cells, I.e. where Clive had 4X NiMH cells. Very curious. Some had a 6 volt charger. Seems like the basic case accommodates different power options.

hand drawn schematic, maybe he had a sip or 2 forgot, or one of them left handed cigarettes got the munchies said awe to hell with it.

no schematic ??
