Inside the humble glue gun.

A nice down to earth video showing the super-simple heating system in a hot melt glue gun. An absolutely cost optimised device due to the high volume used in hobbies and industrial applications.

Bonus glitter glue and a moulded glue-pebble with integrated LED.
The mould is made from sealant silicone mixed with corn starch (we call it cornflour in the UK). It allows you to make a very simple rubbery moulding material. There's a video about that too from 2014:-

I left a glue gun plugged in for a month once. Still worked!

I still have a Woolworths branded mini glue gun that claims to be rated at 60W. It certainly heats up quickly but I shall have to test the actual power. Still available on Amazon under random brands.

It looks like the PTC heater has somehow flashed across.

It was a prototype lava lamp. I boosted the heat to accelerate the experiment and then got distracted.

You get solder melting pots, but the temperature control is little more than a dimmer.

So what did you blow up in the kitchen yesterday?

A couple of months ago I had one of those go "bang" on me, tripping the circuit breaker, as it was heating up. I took mine apart and posted a pic online: https://octodon.social/@shello/101143513807933928
Now I know it's not supposed to be full of glue inside. Thanks Clive :D

l have been looking for a hot glue melting pot for a couple of years to melt down all the old bits of hot glue l have scraped up after a glueing session.......unfortunately the cost of these glue pots is ridiculous if you can actually find them for sale .......l also tried to find out what temperature the glue sticks melt at ,,,thanx to this video and your use of the thermo coupler l see about 150 degrees C is the approx melting point....so l wonder if there is a melting pot for other things that could be adapted , so instead of glue guns you could have a hot glue dip....l am thinking of something like Keratin glue melting pots which are a lot cheaper ......( keratin glue as used in hair extensions ) l am going on the chinese sites to see the prices

I like your LCD Thermocouple Unit TM902C. I’ve seen them on eBay for just over £5 (including thermocouple) from UK suppliers. I wonder what’s inside that? There’s an idea for another video!

Thanks for taking apart one of these. I do have one but its still in the packaging. Seeing the teardown, a possible click bait title popped in my head. Think of the movies starring Leslie Nielsen - The Naked Glue gun £2.

A million is the next YouTube button level. I never even expected to get to 100K.

I just noticed you will be breaking thru the 500K subscribers barrier soon. Is Youtube sending you some new gadget you can take apart on camera?

temperature is relative to where you live, i lived in far north QLD Australia for 7 years and at 28c you were pulling out a jacket or coat

Be interesting to see your take on the glue gun. Julian Ilet did a tear down of one a week or so ago
