SMD LED BCDC PCB MKII build.

Building the second version of the LED coaster thing with the corner pillars nudged in a little bit.

Quite a nice PCB to build and it looks pretty good too.

Hi Iain, what's your home address? I did order some PCBs and was going to make a video about them.

Big Clive

Hi Clive, any chance I could get a copy of the board layout file?I’ve got parts and would love to put one together this weekend for my son.

Hey Clive, could you (or someone else) please hook me up with the dimensions / outline for those usb-connectors? I'd like to include them on a pcb. Thanks!

I'll buy one!

Michael Thompson

You give me hope that one day my sausages, bananas, or cucumbers will learn to solder without getting burnt or the components disappearing under a mountain of silver goo. You are the Michelangelo of soldering. I read on the web somewhere that he had to put up his own scaffolding for the Sistine Chapel job.

Demolished Man

Definitely needs to be made in “Lurid pink”.

Put a logo inside the rectangle. It would be smallish but you can use a bold color without worrying about hiding the tracks. BC surrounded by or “caged in” by tracks. Appropriate. Neat project. I somehow miss the little multicolored barrels of through hole assemblies. All those little guys neatly lined up look impressive!

had to solder some 0402 and 0201 (imperial) SMD Resistors at work for training recently. they were horrible, had to use hot air and paste in the end. I can just about do 0402 with an iron and a microscope. 0805 and 0603 are pretty easy once you get the hang of it, smaller than that is a nightmare. I generally use 0805 in most designs.

Pretty cool!

Soldering with 'Uncle Clive' is very theraputic. I'd buy a spare PCB if Clive has one going.

Use PINK soldermask!

Manoel

Soldering went impressively well! Not sure how my eyes would deal with it */*

If you make a kit out of it, sign me up. would definitely get one!

Claudio Zodio

Imagine having to quote some one for a batch of 80, 1cm square boards with thirty-two 0201 leds and a micro. You quickly start thinking how much you can charge to get them to say screw this and go away with out them knowing that's what you are doing.

Zach Allin

my rule for soldering is use the lowest heat you can get good joints with in no more than a second.

Zach Allin

It looks really good. I would confine the logo to be inside the oval. That way it won't cover any of the tracks and there is no problem if the mask isn't transparent.

Nani Isobel

You need to find a board maker that'll do "Lurid Pink" solder mask. Then get a few & put together a limited run of kits. I'd buy one.

Scott Miller

could the LEDs be soldered upside down so they shine into the PCB?

Ruthsarian

I recently tried some 1206 LEDs, my first SMD attempt. Let's just say it didn't go quite that smoothly.

Bill Kerr

Just wanted to say thank you Clive for all the PCB making tutorials. I have been happily making my own PCBs for the past few weeks now.

As my eyes get older I have to use a magnifying visor when working with smd(s). It is amazing how good I've gotten at soldering when the solder pad appears as large as a nickel.

The project is great. Did anybody else think that once it was lit the shadows of the tracks looked like an Aztec cockroach?

I'll add a link in the video description. <a href="https://www.aliexpress.com/item/100pcs-2-pin-mini-MICRO-USB-2-Pin-Jack-Interface-Connector-socket-SMD-SMT-pcb-dock/32845780488.html" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.aliexpress.com/item/100pcs-2-pin-mini-MICRO-USB-2-Pin-Jack-Interface-Connector-socket-SMD-SMT-pcb-dock/32845780488.html</a>

Big Medusa. Congrats on your 500k too Clive. A major milestone to tick off the bucket list. Keep up the fantastic effort you put in for our viewing pleasure.

Mike Wynne

Those micro USB connectors with only two pins are awesome!! I bought some normal surface mount ones a while ago, I wish I had known about those because the standard ones are a nightmare with those tiny little pins like you said.
