For Nick Nolte who was asking about the dimensions of the 2-pin micro USB connector I used on the prototype LED coaster.
When I have a component like this I tend to lay it on a 1/10" grid (a standard grid size in electronics) to get a feel for general size and pin/pad spacing. I'll then do a rough sketch as shown above (the original sketch on a post-it note block) and then build it on the PCB.
The socket fits very conveniently into 1/10" spacing. The doodle shows a grid where each square is one tenth of an inch.
The round pad marked as 1mm/2mm is a 1mm hole in a 2mm pad for the sockets through hole pins. The rectangular pads next to it are a rough guide to where I was going to place the side pads that are used to anchor the connector solidly in place.
The 3.5" square was just a rough guide to the whole PCB size.
