Presto hot dogger on twice its rated voltage.

Kim Sleep located and sent me this unit from Canada. It's a hot dog cooker that basically electrocutes the hot dogs by passing mains current through them.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2ZZbuOeNmw

It's designed for 120V so I thought it would be interesting to see how it performed on 240V.

We had one of those when I was about six. It helped me understand why electricity can be dangerous. As soon as I saw it in the video I remembered the smell.

Load it up with pickles for a light show!

In Sweden it was quite common for students and Army recruits to do this by simply pushing the ends of a stripped mains cable into the ends of the sausage, and then plugging the cable into the mains. Have you tried doing fish fingers or low fat hamburgers in the toaster? That works well, too.

Jonas Otter

I forwarded this to my wife, and she remarked that "This is like watching a penis take an extremely dangerous shower." :)

This is true, raw meat needs to be above something like 65C for at least a couple of mins. Esp' Pork with it's Trichinosis risk.

I think I remember seeing an ad in the back of Boys Life magazine for plans to make this cooker from a board and nails like Jeff mentions. Should have been a merit badge for that kind fearless cooking.

Jim

It might work for reheating sausages, but can't be used to cook from raw.

Big Clive

cook some sausages in it mate ^^

Steven Cox

The electrodes look galvanized to me.

We used to make those back in the ‘70s with a board, nails, and an old extension cord. Weren’t as many lawyers around in those days either😉

Jeff LaHay

A hot dogger? Hmm. ;D

I remember Mr. Wizard cooking hot dogs with 2 forks and a cut up extension cord back in the 80s.

Boiling eggs in a biscuit tin, an old story from my father during UK national service -method mentioned here "what is said on Patron = stays in Patron" it is too dangerous IMHO Do not try this at home Biscuit tin filled with eggs and water Longish piece of wood with 2 long nails about 3 inch apart dip nails into water but not near the tin Connect wires with bayonet lamp style plug and connect it to a light socket (no earth protection) Add salt so that the water will boil Don't touch anything, too much salt might blow the lighting circuit fuse. Do not try this at home Clive it might be an interesting test to see how much current is drawn in salty water with nails that are hotdog distance. I bet there is less salt in modern hotdogs also it is worth a mention that the meat is MSM Chicken - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mechanically_separated_meat I am surprised no one has marketed GREENDOGS that are something more tasty https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soylent_Green Hotdog SPIDERS - search google images for it popular in Canada by an open fire. That was an epic video. So much suspense.

Big Clive

I should definitely hunt down some big German sausages.

Big Clive

That would make a great thumbnail for the video.

Big Clive

Thanks Clive. That was fun! The video reminds me of Photonicinduction and a coconut.

Nuts 'n' Proud

It would have to be very moist and pre-cooked.

Big Clive

I try to avoid shipping tools. The weight makes it expensive to post them and you can't take them in hand luggage. I ended up with a set of tools in the UK and one here on the IOM.

Big Clive

I used 240V hot dogs.

Big Clive

It should definitely be dimmable.

Big Clive

Uh, you're on the Europe side of the planet. You don't use Hot Dogs, you test with good Bratwurst! :)

This reminds me of the old school visit from the local power utility BCHydro back in the 80s. They would place some hotdogs on a wire in a small exterior transformer box turn the gym lights off then switch in the transformer and stink up the gym to scare everyone into being careful around high voltage lines and to not break into transformer closets. Will try and find a video of this

Vaughn B.

Oh, Clive, how sad those tiny little weiners are. They look smaller than your fingers! I'd send you some nice Canadian franks if it were possible...

Charles

The singer/artist Laurie Anderson has a piece "Hotel Hot Dogs" where she explains how to put a hot dog into a light socket to cook them in a pinch. I always thought it would work, but, be possibly dangerous. I've seen videos of people zapping pickles and they get a lovely eerie glow. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UEN3sNcD_E The piece was going to be on a CD, but was pulled off it before release, I assume due to Label being worried someone would emulate and die.

Cheese sticks need to be tested.

Lovely!

Michael Thompson

I'll get a photo of one tomorrow and post it!

Rocco Rizzo

You know we now need a list of foods that can be cooked this way - i mean clearly porridge... but probably burger patties - spring rolls, two bananas in back to back formation. remove the clear cover but impiment a face shield.

Steve Lemon

here's a link for anyone wanting to see it like me https://youtu.be/H66Fbg9nrk4 (plus clive left a comment explaining what happened)

Fantastic dangerous kitchen appliances from the 20th century! Lovely! Entertaining, too!

I laughed out loud when I saw the tin of hotdogs. Please someone from America post a picture of the hotdog section in a supercenter.

Paul Malloy

Try it some time with a pickle for a real light show. While I have your attention, what kind of packaging do you use when transporting your tools overseas? I am moving across the pond, and have some computer and electrical tools I want to move. Nothing that will not run on 220v, I know I will have to purchase that stuff over there. It would be handy to know. Thanks for all you do Clive!

Rocco Rizzo

You're an evil man.

I've seen enough Barry Lewis to know, where this is going

Sebastian Rietig

Rutt's Hut in NJ calls them rippers. They deep fry them.

Aaron Nadler

When it splits open it’s a “ripper”. I like rippers best. Kudos Kim for finding this electrocution treasure!

Aww I was hoping for a glowing melty type video like Barry Lewis did with his Cheese Toastie Maker

Christopher Smith

You know, I can't say that I've ever pondered the power factor of a hot dog. Now I know. Hooray for speedy weiners!

Try a pickle. I'm thinking the sodium and translucent nature of pickle innards might get you a very terrible green night light.

I had that exact same Presto Cooker as a kid! It always made hot dogs so fun and exciting. It leaves the hot dogs with a very distinctive taste and aftertaste that cannot be duplicated anywhere else. I always associated that taste with the taste of electrocution, but it may have simply been lead poisoning. I have to say your hot dogs are rather milquetoast. You need a big, plump, firm, red American hot dog!

Lilla Gubben

If it's running 240v, can't you run the hot dogs in series.

evilution

C'mon, you have to make your own next but more dangerous.

evilution

Nice bit of hot dogging there.

Full sized hot dogs in a can? Shocking.

Rob Clark

This seems safe

TomArnd

The odd and dangerous videos are the best videos
