Can I let go at 10mA hand to hand current?

One of those random scary things I try.  Not something I'll do too regularly, but quite exciting now and then.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DTXmYAVbCr8

This video is basically a scary test of the AC current threshold where I couldn't let go of a hand to hand contact.

Hopefully the video conveys how intense the experience was.  And yes, I did survive.

At the end the current was borderline on being able to let go, but the "stickiness" of the rubber hand electrodes didn't help at all by concentrating the current in a small area as I attempted to break free.  (That was a real yell of pain.)

Can I let go at 10mA hand to hand current?

Comments

I learned the hard way to get a mains isolation transformer. If 10 mA hurts I am not going to see what 30mA feels like before a circuit breaker *hopefully* kicks in. Best wishes.

Nuts 'n' Proud

He turned himself into the hot dog in this video...

Shock therapy is still in use today. I'm sure it's less barbaric than it used to be. I understand that it's a useful and effective procedure in certain instances.

blakethepatton

i had a shock of one of them spark generator modules you did on one of your vids, was certanly an eye and arse opener

Oh dear, I would say shock-therapy was also quite a harsh way to cure metnal illness...

It'll have hit some magic keywords like hot dog cooking and been suggested to the foodies or something.

Big Clive

Ah yes, I see hotdogger is way ahead in views than most of your recent videos... I wonder why it’s so popular.

Right now it's going to struggle to compete with the hot dogger video.

Big Clive

It’ll be really interesting to see how the stats of this video compare to your normal type of video.

The electric chair is one of the most barbaric ways to kill someone. It's not fast and it causes more pain that literally burning someone at the stake.

Big Clive

Wow! Ineresting video there Clive. Glad you put in the disclaimers. I was wondering, Is this how the electric chair works?

Thanks, Dustin.

Best of luck and well wishes from Baltimore

Dustin

Thanks. The doctors dont know yet unfortunately. They're still trying to get her heart rate down before doing tests as it's racing. It went up to over 160bpm at one point! She wasn't copying your video though, that's for sure. 🙂

Hope she's OK. Any idea what caused it?

Big Clive

Coincidentally, my wife was rushed to hospital yesterday with Atrial Fibrillation!

When I was tidying up the earths in a consumer unit wiring (live of course). I got a shock, then realised a ring main makes a perfect 1-1 matching transformer. When I metered it up its potential was 240v, however the current was tiny. The first ever mains shock I got was when I was about 8, setting up fairy lights, they had an old two pin plug on then, I squeezed the two terminals to fit them into the socket, spent the rest of the day at school thinking it was my last.

Graham Eida

Wow...Hard To Watch. Would Not Trust Any Body Else But You To Post Something Like This Let Alone Me Watch To End...Wow!

Thanks Clive - will bear it in mind...

Keith Miller

It's interesting but wholly unnecessary. No amount of experimentation is worth ever putting your life at risk. Especially not for a fucking YouTube video.

Randi Tastix

30mA is a balance between whole circuit protection and protection against false trips. If you got yourself in the unlucky situation of passing 25mA it would be a horrific experience with no guarantee of the RCD tripping. Also keep in mind that RCDs will not trip if the shock is from either side of a broken neutral path or the normal L to N path. They can also be defeated when the supply has gone through a rectifier.

Big Clive

It was interesting up to the end but I think it would be best to NOT publish to youtube. Too many nuts out there who may try to outdo you. If you are going to do something like this in the future PLEASE at least have someone else present in case things go BAD.

In the UK we have 30mA RCD 'protection'. I had assumed that was chosen as a safe level - well now I am not so sure! I am going to be a whole lot more careful in future. Thank you Clive, but no more like that please - MY heart will not take it!

Keith Miller

Hence the use of good quality RS components 2W carbon film resistors and at least two in series before I was making contact. I like to do dangerous things safely.

Big Clive

CLIVE! You are a nutter!!! I have to agree that you should not post this to YouTube. I thought it was morbidly fascinating to watch but at the same time I was wondering why you’re subjecting yourself to it. Pfffffff... we need you alive man!

Robert K

This is NOT a time to get cheepy resistors with the wrong colour bands !!!..... Seriously Clive mate PLEASE don't do that again. We don't want to you to go bye bye. I know your taking all the precautions you can but what if that foot switch wielded closed ? It didn't sound like it had a microswitch in it. If you do ever repeat it at least have someone with you, put a timer inline and with no pun intended have a dead man's switch consisting of a push to make mushroom button on the desk that you have to keep pressure on. Hope your feeling ok after that ordeal mate. A very interesting experiment but I think once is enough. Stay safe and all the best..... Stu

Clive, you’re a hoot! This has to be the most intriguing video I’ve seen in quite a while. I enjoyed your audible reaction as the current rose, not hard to judge the intensity of the experiment. I’m pretty sure FB would not let this one stay up long. Cheers!

Well, that was the strangest fetish video I've ever been tricked into watching.

does anyone wonder why the last video was about cooking hotdogs with mains and the very next one is clive’s prototype of prestos’ next product, the ‘clivedogger’. i just bought a hotdogger off of ebay because of that video.

Jesus Clive, what was in those hot dogs?

Mark Dennehy

I know you're strong and mindful Clive, but some viewer will imitate you and be stupid and die (e.g. confuse live and neutral). Not worth it. I'd pull this video off the platforms if I were you.

Clive, you crazy Scot! I listen and learn from you all the way from Texas. We need you whole, a little crazy and HEALTHY!

Ya, best to keep this one off YouTube, I respect your dedication to the pursuit of knowledge. Besides suddenly stopping your heart, there can be more subtle long term effects of playing with this sort of thing.

The Griffiths Family

Hmmm, yeah, leave this on for Patreons only I'm thinking.

I'm not sure it would be a good idea to publish this one, just to avoid people copying it or seeing it as 'a challenge'. It's interesting to see the effects, but worrying if people with less restraints, less intelligence or more alcohol, see it and decide to have a go themselves.

Dave Curran

Interesting, but, yes, not a video to release to the public on YouTube.

Ian Harris

Stunt riders, Red Bull Pilots, hell even skiers and snowboarders put their lives at risk. Clive's pedal solution might be a bit 'Heath Robinson', but I think he knows what he's doing, he does work with wigglies everyday! :)

mikenco

...but seriously, I'd think twice before releasing this to YouTube, their new rules on dangerous videos might earn you a strike

The Tinkering Shed

There is a name for when people stay up all night and inflict pain on themselves intentionally with objects purchased from the internet 😲

The Tinkering Shed

Clive, you're completely bonkers and I salute you.

Ralfy would be useless in a situation like this. It would also require a defibrillator and the closest public unit would be too late.

Big Clive

Jesus Clive. I learnt a lot but I kept waiting for you to reveal Ralphy was over just in case...

Charleso

It's certainly going to get the armchair HSE experts agitated. This pleases me.

Big Clive

The electric chair is probably the most barbaric way to kill people. Not fast, and would stimulate every single nerve and muscle in the path of the current. Pretty much in the same category as burning a witch at the stake.

Big Clive

Less realistic and exciting.

Big Clive

I think it will most likely create a diffused path across the chest that widens out as the current is increased.

Big Clive

Time will tell. It's inevitable that someone who is terrified of electricity will report it.

Big Clive

He had a foot switch set up - if his foot wasn't pressing down on the switch, the circuit was broken so no power could flow and it was safe to touch.

Amos Bannister

Clive, did you order a load of armchair health and safety retards because a load have just been delivered.

evilution

eeek... I have a noob question though - when you were adjusting the resistor position - was there any chance you could have been the link to ground at that point? or was it just that with the un 20k protected area was insulated - so even if that was the case you wouldn't get much current?

Steve Lemon

Personally I have 0 notion from this that made me think hey I should try this! I cringed the whole time and was like no thanks!

Yikes Big Clive. Don't hurt yourself like that. Let us hurt you instead :) I'd do the Milgram on you. BZZZZZT Did you feel that? What do you mean yes? Here, let me turn it up. BZZZZZZZZZZZT.

Nani Isobel

I have to say, I was really uncomfortable all through that. Perhaps it doesn't help that I presently live about a quarter of a mile from the former prison where they used to carry out electric chair executions - people have told me about how the lights used to dim around town when they used it. ooooh! Please don't do that any more.

Why didn't you do this between your left hand and left shoulder? It would have proven the same thing and not risked dying.

Mark Trombley

I smell hot dogs...

Michael Thompson

ok, it had to be done! better you than me lol

Richard Boyce

Jesus you are batty crazy! Great video though

Please be careful. I'd be very upset if you hurt yourself doing something like this. :'(

Jessica McIntosh

Makes you wonder if the current passes through your chest like the lines in a Lichtenberg Figure, or just the shortest route just through the skin and tissue on the front of your ribcage. I think if you pressed those electrodes to either side of your chest, 10mA would create an entirely different result.

mikenco

Haha your mad... but entertaining, and obviously entertaining. Don’t try this at home 😂⚡️⚡️

Graham Eida

Oh my god Clive this is terrifying and fascinating, thank you for putting your body on the line for science. Do you think Youtube is going to be happy with this video though?

TomArnd

Lots and lots of warnings about the high risk of death and not trying it. Watching the video will probably put people off trying it anyway.

Big Clive

I was working with RMS values. Peak current at the end was probably in the region of 18mA.

Big Clive

Well That was a little close to home.. Glad your ok Clive

Jono Harley

Having viewed some of the "challenges" on youtube, It worries me that someone without Clive's expertise and safety awareness is going to try to copy this at home with tragic consequences.

Gary Bleads

"...how far do I go here...?" me yelling at my monitor: "NOOOOoooooooo! Duuude! :O"

Dustin

Holy crap! Wow.

Benjamin Hall

I thoroughly enjoyed that.

Clive, did you perhaps forget about RMS? Yes, the average voltage is 240-250, but your peak voltage is around 340.

Justin Smith

Gonnae no dae that

Rob Clark

Jesus, man! :O I mean I know you work around stuff like this all the time, but... fuck all... any little thing that goes wrong... :(

Dustin

I agree. I can totally see the YouTube ninnies/nannies removing the video because it 'promotes' or depicts a dangerous activity.

Justin Smith

The worst shock I ever got was across two neutral wires... stopped trying to get free and woke up ok.

Michael Gilchrest

Big Clive version of auto erotic asphyxiation... stay safe clive.

Michael Gilchrest

Hello Clive, I haven't seen the video but I would put some big *Do not try this at home* warnings on it. If someone tries to replicate this with a weak heart, it's all over red rover.

Rob Googe
