Zero strobing mechanics work light.

This is one of those videos that happened unexpectedly when a friend gave me a faulty mechanics work light.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RB6_T5Eq8uk

There are some very neat things about the circuitry in these lights. The most notable being the linear intensity regulation using a MOSFET and very simple gate voltage control.

There's a link to an eBay search for the clones (and the real thing) in the video description if you want to grab one.

Zero strobing mechanics work light.

I'm actually surprised they even emulated the dimming circuitry. I thought it might have been a standard bike chip with two intensities and strobing.

My AAA battery powered version arrived. No surprises. Took a few pictures and tried doodling a schematic. http://imgur.com/gallery/Klh8C3Y

Probably an even better result the chargers died as the separation was probably so bad that it was either going to be them or you. A fine tipped iron will be needed for the tiny connections on the socket. It may be worth adding a bit of flux.

Big Clive

Cheers. I was born in Victoria. A looooong time ago!

They where "genuine Samsung QC chargers" that cost 1usd at eBay... can't imagine why they where not good quality... Because nobody lies in eBay listings 😎

Will most likely resolder the connector, I took it with me and will take it with me to work where I have a decent soldering bolt. The 100w solderaxe is not well suited for this kind of work.

Trond Jarle Pedersen

You could resolder or renew the USB connector. It may have done you a favour by destroying the power supplies. A good quality one should handle a short circuit.

Big Clive

Pulled apart my clone, the one that killed two USB power supplies. Same shitty soldering, but it seems like the USB charge port have come lose and shorted out. Cordless screwdriver... Look, they have their place. If you are paid to take stuff apart and time is of the essence then, yes by all means. But in a Big Clive video? No. What Clive chooses is fine. We're not on the clock here people. We are here because we CHOOSE to be. So relax! Come, let me get you something...

Michael Thompson

If I see "Big Clive" branded stuff I'm buying it! Shit it's the only name I can trust anymore!

Michael Thompson

I've said it before and I'll say it again. I LOVE kicking back on a night "at liberty" and enjoying my "technical journals" with a libation or two. Libation, sensation, that standard of mine... (to quote a song)

Michael Thompson

Agreed. They're very good and the cheap one will give you an idea of how good a design it is.

Big Clive

Buy a cheap one for now.... I promise you you'll love it.... They are light bright,no wires... You won't look back

Julian Butler

The endoscope cameras (£5) are ideal for looking down spark plug holes, come with integral dimmable lights, and some a 90 degree mirror so you can look around.

Marmite

Resisting the urge to buy one. I already have a CFL based mains powered "tube" style work light, although it's bulky and gets in the way. Could even attach a switchable 5V buck regulator to the solar light system so I can charge it outside. Damn it Clive! :P

Marmite

Too wide. You might be better with a keychain light for looking down a spark plug hole.

Big Clive

Some big Clive PCB flashlights. Sell them sans soldered components for a real dyi feel

Michael Gilchrest

Do you think the light would fit in a spark plug hole?

The discussion on patreon is much better than youtube, easier too. I think you’ll like it here.

Michael Gilchrest

yeah just bought another one, same design aspects but with a folding light bar.... i did look at the original but they have a new design with more power (65SL)... so now i want that one..... as soon as it hits uk shores without the dreaded import tax from the US

Julian Butler

One feature I didn't spot until seeing the light being reviewed on a mechanic channel is that the slim body allows the light to be poked down through narrow areas allowing them to be lit from within instead of trying to shine light through gaps. It's a well designed light.

Big Clive

I've had one of the clones for a while..... they are brilliant, the magnet on the bottom with the pivot is so so useful as well as being slim and bright...... now ive seen the difference i may invest in the original Astro.... great work as always Clive

Julian Butler

You know Poundland would stock them, on the £5 shelf of course!

The Tinkering Shed

Just became a supporter! your last video was shocking and I knew we are "Brothers from another mother" Cheers from Vancouver Island BC.

That would be nice, but I'm not sure how practical it would be.

Big Clive

I saw that one and was almost duped by the listing into thinking it was rechargeable too. But it is just AAA cells.

Big Clive

The cheap Astro clones that I have are not only less bright but also the battery doesn't last that long. I guess they could save even more by omitting the dimming function and using a simple switch to turn on the LEDs.

went down the ebay rabbit hole on this one and ordered a smaller, battery AAA battery powered version. the handle looks the same, but the cob looks a little less than half as long as this one. curious to see if the circuitry will be similar.

Ruthsarian

Good video. When are we going to see 'Big Clive' branded LED products? You know it makes sense!

The Tinkering Shed

It's usually the premium cost cells that have higher than 3000mAh. The highest standard capacity that is easier to make seems to be about 2600mAh. I've just received some suspiciously light "3000mAh" cells with a head light.

Big Clive

To the best of my admittedly uncertain knowledge, the highest legitimate capacity 18650 cells are only in the 3400-3600 mAh range; 4400 mAh is highly unlikely.

Justin Smith

Have to try one of these. Cheapest one about 8 eur with whopping "4400mAh 18650 Battery" ordered. If true, the cell itself is more worth than gadget itself. Most probably it's standard about 1200mAh inside, actually. Most hilarious descriptions on eBay was 80000 lumens... almost 1KW on Your hand on LED. Kaboom. Concept as it is looks very handy and useful so it's worth to test with this price.

Thanks Clive
