Data's back. Let's have a story.

This is an experiment to see what you guys think of the storytime face-format of videos.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yPqpflkdt2o

It's all about the many decades I spent doing Christmas lighting before politics and money ruined everything.

Data's back. Let's have a story.

Selfie cam, so fixed focus. (I think!)

Big Clive

Did you focus on the boxes on purpose? Dunno if the drink made you slightly blurry? XD

My son and I enjoyed your story quite a bit. Fascinating look into the history of Christmas lighting. You have inspired us to up our game in the local neighborhood :)

Rand Gray

Love hearing these stories. Im down for seeing more of these types of videos.

Entropic Nightmares

I beg to return to hear your wondrous stories! Return to hear your wondrous stories!

Michael Thompson

I love storytime with Big Clive! I'm not fussed about the lighting or backdrop or whatever, when the focus is the story.

Anonymous

To the best of my knowledge I'm back on the Tattoo this year, but being freelance I never like to assume anything.

Big Clive

It's an LED unit so probably has dodgy CRI. I deliberately chose a warmer colour because otherwise my face looked a bit too white.

Big Clive

Rambly but I enjoyed it! I'll watch the next one too. I have an armchair-expert-probably-wrong-guess, but, did that ring light have a really really low CRI? I've gotta say that I liked the workshop setting, but everything had that muddy yellow sodium vapor lamp look.

PeteyPak

I have enjoyed your longer "story" videos. Particularly the one you did about a year ago; where you answered questions while building a custom LED tube light. This video was nice to watch (listen) to on my second monitor, while I worked on other things. I have liked some of your previous "story" videos where you're talking while either doing a longer build, or a long unbuild. Obviously you want to separate your standard build/unbuild videos from your story videos, so maybe have long and short versions (like your recent one on a dodgy driver where you have a long and a short). My favorite videos of yours are the ones where you take stuff apart and explain how they work (perfect for us kids that didn't go to school for this stuff), but these longer, story style videos are still fun to watch (listen) to.

Great big thumbs up for storytime. Much hilarity, also. As a broadcast engineer, some of your "issues" and "solutions" are very similar to mine. I loved it, too. BTW, I hope you're still working at the Tattoo!! I really enjoyed the interviews and shots of the show. Cheers, my friend!!

Chuck Kirchner

great story teller and so entertaining.keep em coming Big Clive , say once a month put one video story on from your work days experiences .........

John Catterall

They'd be disappointed. They were spontaneously mis-labeled just before I recorded the video.

Big Clive

Well Clive you prove the exception to the rule. not only can you DO the job you can also teach. Also if George Dixons collegues should come knocking ,it might be your labeling od certain yellow boxes which are clearly readable on a 65" TV......

Ian James

My heart goes out to you about bottom line taking priority a good job. I was put on the road to let contractors could do the job cheaply that me and my guys took pride in doing. Now customers at the company complain to me that service has gone to hell. I tell them I feel their pain as I too have cell phone problems that I would have corrected If I were still with the company.

I felt like I was sitting in your living room enjoying beer while you told your story. Thank you brother. Time well spent!

I enjoy working while listening to a Clive talk. The lighting is orangish but that works well with my dim lights.

It was an excellent video. It would be nice every once in a while but not all the time. It helps that you have a real story to tell. There are so many videos out there with a long intro and then a lot of filler talk. Bleh. Also, I don't always have time to sit and watch a long video. For example the new-year's MBC took me a week with five or six sittings when I was in the mood for rambly bits. So, yeah, it's good.

Nani Isobel

Dude, you're cute! The beard is awesome, I wanted one like that when I was a kid.

Jessica McIntosh

I think the cadence and lighting was just fine for this type of video. Not something watch of a lunchtime, but lovely to have running on my second screen in the evening over a few glasses of the vin rouge. Thank you! :)

mikenco

Loved it. Happy to hear stories from Uncle Clive, even if he forgets the "Once upon a time... and they all lived happily ever after" :)

Moz in Oz

Still have the ferric chloride finger. ;-)

Charles Bruckner

Suspicious looking yellow container over your right shoulder... Hurmmmmm...

Well some can, and they get rather upset when you compliment them on how well it is starting to grow out...

Lostngone

Great video, had to watch it in 2 parts, work got in the way. The only negative thing that happened was my wife said someone needs to chop your beard off! Don't listen to her. (Any time a woman comments about my beard I always reply with 'you're just jealous because you can only grow a moustache' πŸ˜†

The Tinkering Shed

Fantastic story Clive, fascinating insight to the job.πŸ‘

Andy Kerruish

That was 2014 - the first year I didn't do it. The bells are pretty huge. About 6' (1.8m) high.

Big Clive

After we redid a lot of the hanging effects in LED ropelight I pondered salvaging a load of the spiky lamp caps in case collectors wanted them. But sadly they all got scrapped without warning.

Big Clive

I have to be careful how deep I go into the Disney stuff, but it's an idea.

Big Clive

The first is definitely one of my installs and the second is a Lightways install after they had padded out the top catenaries with the filler panels.

Big Clive

Yeah. We used to do some embarrassingly twee publicity shots for the papers. (That is me in the picture.)

Big Clive

Absolutely fascinating! Can you talk about your Disneyland Paris experiences? Thanks!

I look forward to both the electronics and the stories behind how you learned about it. The stories provide the context for what you share with us.

massive sex toys

i love your stories and i have nothing to do with lighting electronics or anything electrical

Steven Cox

I really enjoy these story videos!

Enjoyed hearing the stories about what goes on behind the scenes at special events. After watching your video I searched youtube for some video of the christmas lights to see what you were telling stories about. Perhaps you could post links to some video in your comments section. For example here is one from 09 showing the rink and bells, etc. you talked about. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OBJWNpCvBYI Here is another from 2017 switch on showing the newer lights https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tfasa4CXwPQ&t=72s or perhaps mention for folks to search youtube to see the lights.

Thanks for the story Clive. I enjoyed it. I look forward to seeing more.

Nuts 'n' Proud

Enjoyed this, more please.

Lawrence ORourke

Interesting story. Rambling, but excellent. I think that people will like more of them. Perhaps not as long, maybe a half hour or so, but hey, what do I know.

Rocco Rizzo

Thought i'd have a look through the Evening Times to see how much of what Clive described appeared in the local press and I discovered this photo. https://www.eveningtimes.co.uk/news/13243197.let-there-be-lights/

Jimmeecee

I really enjoyed this as well - would love to see more like this.

neko

This must be some of your handiwork. I can see what you mean about the bells being three dimensional. Wow! https://youtu.be/ONF_pX6ZrcE

Rocco Rizzo

Thanks Clive, that was awesome mate. Any videos from you are great, front back or top doesn't matter. Lighting and sound were great. I've said it before, most of us would be happy watching a video of you make your breakfast in the morning. For some reason, you make it enjoyable no matter what you film.

Mike Wynne

Enjoyed the story, funny how us techies take ownership of work that we're proud of. Lighting and sound were fine for me.

Phil Collins

I thoroughly enjoyed your stroll down memory lane in especially the exquisite details.

...and "massive sex toys" next to that!

TassieBob

The tub marked "explosives" in the background is a nice touch :-)

TassieBob

I don't normally like to sit and "watch" video's of people talking, but, not sure if it was the way you went about it, the animation in your voice/face but I enjoyed every minute of it !

Enjoyed the video and the story time, thanks. I see a lighting arrestor in the back ground. I used to help hang pole mounted Christmas decorations on wooden poles here in Indiana. Nothing extravagant. Unfortunately about all of the small towns & cites have given up on Christmas decorations.

Also it was cool to see studio B and more of the background shots so we can see the Big Clive in its natural habitat.

Lostngone

Loved it! You were all into it and then your phone died... πŸ˜†

Lostngone

Couldn't really make it short. The full story had to be told.

Big Clive

It was central to two shelves. I'll try it differently next time.

Big Clive

Sadly there are neither in those boxes. I was just wondering who would spot them.

Big Clive

Actually rather enjoyed this video. Sort of a shooting the bull while having a beer at the pub feel.

It's good to hear story's of your history. It's also nice to see you collected some 'artifacts' for your personal use.

Neil Tonks

Ramble? Yes please.

B3

Oh, just found the blown fuse video linked off this one; the sound on that one is much better.

George Dorn

I enjoyed the story. A bit long perhaps but I enjoyed the entire thing.

Mark Trombley

Definitely a big ole +1 from me on long rambly stories from the industry. Takes me back to when I used to do theater lighting in college. Also lets me fiddle with whatever project I'm working on while you're rambling. The sound could use a little work, maybe a better mic? The backdrop is nice, makes me want a video where you give us a tour of your workspace.

George Dorn

What you’ve made there is a podcast episode :)

Induction bulb street light 😺😺😺 I saw these briefly at a store here in Calgary, but you’d usually see at least one out on each visit and some would have a pretty high frequency buzz. Soon replaced with t5 fluorescent.

Vaughn B.

Sounds like your mic is in or near a resonant cavity. Diggin' the story though...

B3

The tales of an electrician. I like it

Jonathan Brown

Why do you keep the massive sex toys next to the explosives? Could get messy if you mix them up.

Mark Trombley
