I think the colour change chips - including the more sophisticated serial data ones like WS2812B type chips are actually dedicated logic block chips and not full blown processors. It lets them cram a lot into a small area and keeps the cost down.

All it would have access to via those two contacts would be the on board resistor.

I 'decapped' a three colour LED you sent me as a prize but it involved a dremmel and a carpenter's honing block, it took two attempts but it was really interesting, the video is still on my channel, I found it interesting, the size of the processor blew my mind!
