Did you find the slow colour changing LEDs in a surface mount format?

Late update, but I got my kit and it's been fun and really fast to build thus far. That's mostly from watching Clive build his and picking up some techniques to be honest. I'm an old thru-hole guy so more SMD practice is most welcome I used the same technique and even kept all the numbers the same way 'round because that's how I am. I went ahead and ordered slow color changing LEDs for mine and used some nylon screws on the bottom of the legs to reduce scratching. After it all comes together, and if I'm happy with the results I'll share the video.

I'd take a peanut, I've got all the components already, I ordered them for a version of one of your other board designs.

I hated PE at school. I never did it after the first lesson age 11. I refused to read the boring books in English, preferring thrillers and technical books. I was the detention king. I often did my homework in detention. It was usually the same teacher. We got on well - sometimes he would share his flask of sweet luke warm tea and I'd share some biscuits. Happy days.

I had a similar experience in high school with Shakespeare - I had a teacher who was just obsessed with him. She was the department head, so 50% of our books were Shakespeare. I hated her and she didn't like me. Like you, Shakespeare didn't "click" with me and I would have happily failed it, but my stubbornness kicked in and I determined that I would get As in all this lady's courses. The irony is that her courses became the only ones I think I actually studied for.

Peanut or no peanut – either will be great fun! I really enjoy SMT (I know, I'm a bit off), so no problem for me. Depending on the component type, I mostly get on my 10X stereo microscope and apply solder paste to pads with a syringe and small metal tip. Under the microscope, I can apply paste for pads down to 0402 (I've managed 0201 during an unsuccessful phone repair, but they are really fiddly – probably need smaller grain paste). Then, hot air to reflow them all (same kind as yours).

2200 usually means 1%, 3 digit would be 5%. A gotcha on SMD LEDs is that the 'T' markings of the back are manufacturer specific. Similarly with notches on 5050. Most I've had have been one way, but a couple were reversed. I like it when they have a dot on top. You (anyone reading this) should try hot air reflow after doing some SMD with an iron. It's like magic. I use standard leaded paste and run the air at 250-280C. Preheating helps on larger boards.

No peanut I can fully empathise with the English O level 1st attempt - CSE grade 3 2nd attempt - O Level grade F 3rd attempt - O Level grade U I got worse each time. By the third a time I was working and could not relate to the questions at all, with questions like “your school has done ‘x’, write an essay about the experience”. It was more a test of creativity than command of the English language. My command of the language has always been excellent, but the lack of the formal qualification, did limit my options. But it didn’t limit my career, with only three O level passes, I’ve only ever had one job interview, back in 1979. I have been head hunted for all my subsequent jobs.

To your thing with school, i got a 5 in german and a 4 in english because similar reasons but after the applience test the applience talk was really technical because they put a guy there that knows electronics quite well. Many people from my school applied on this working facility but i was picked because i did really well at the 3 day internship.

I won a recent comp of yours so won't enter. I left school early with no exam results, my school was 'prison' like but with more violence. I struggled with career for many years but eventually my experience became more relevant than exam results, now I recruit people who are vastly more qualified than me but have limited experience or real world skill. I think the education system has improved greatly since then and better prepares kids for life, i.e. none of the kids in my family study latin or learn morse code during history lessons!

Peanut! I've just started surface mount soldering after seeing your earlier attempts at it. I certainly had a more difficult time but I've getting better. I wouldn't bother but I do have a project coming up (illuminated Christmas ornaments for workers at a company I I do business with. The more practice I get the better my project will go. Having an illuminated coaster would certainly improve my drab deskscape as well.
