Evolution of a grow light and glitchy camera.

I've featured a similar LED floodlight module in the past that was based on white LEDs, but this one has a few differences and may well be an interesting direction for use in indoor plant growing.  I'm not an expert in such things, so by all means let me know what your own thoughts are on what is effectively a cheap disposable LED floodlight module.

This is also a demonstration of the glitchy video recording of my new Cat S61 phone.  I've been toying with buying one of these for a long time, but was put off by the uncertainty of whether such an expensive phone could actually be used to make decent quality videos at my bench.  Unfortunately it appears that they have a technical issue that causes glitching in apps like open camera and FV-5.  The processor is the same as in many other phones that run these apps seamlessly, so I get the feeling there might be a slight firmware or hardware issue.

I'll not be recording further videos with it until the problem gets resolved (if it gets resolved).

Clive, if you think it's software eating up processor cycles and/or RAM, there is a solution. Go to Android Settings > General > Battery > Power Saving Exclusions and select your camera app. Now when you put your phone in Power Saving Mode, the camera app is free to hog resources and most other apps are not.

In the past I've been able to remove the conformal coating from ICs by simply scraping with a flat-bladed screwdriver. Admittedly that has varying degrees of success, but if you can scrape a bunch of it away, wet your finger and wipe it across the surface to see the characters of the part info.

I had (and still have) the older Cat model, S60, also a FLIR-enabled phone. That one actually worked reasonable good recording, until first firmware update. After that it was a downward trend in relability, both with video and still images. Fun with the FLIR part, but I would not recommend the Cat phones for anything, unfortunately.

OK, it's called a CAT-S. I thought you said catass. My bad. Can you contact the manufacturer? Perhaps there is a firmware fix you don't have??? Good luck, 'cuz it IS a Cat's Ass camera otherwise.

Search ebay for "full spectrum 100w led grow". They're around 8-9 euro (shipped from Hongkong).

I would like to hear more about cheep grow lights as its about £14 for amazon ones please.

No. Internal memory. It's one of those annoying dual SIM phones that lets you choose two SIMs or a Sim and an SD card.

The other functions are useful to have with me at work.

Big Clive

I had luck reducing it, but not increasing it.

Big Clive

Do you have the CAT phone recording directly to the SD card?

evilution

Surely, the video glitch is grounds enough to get a refund as it's not fit for purpose - that's if you want your money back of course... Looked the phone up and it's a pretty good bit of kit, shame I'm locked into a contract for the next year or so

Sorry to read that, Clive. You have been on a camera quest for so long. When you find that camera it will be a great day. I hope it is soon

Michael Thompson

Have you tried increasing the video bitrate in open camera?

Fabian Schillig

I looked to see if there was a community version of the operating system for the S61 and it appears they have made rooting it difficult.

Big Clive

The S61 is the newer version with a higher resolution thermal camera.

Big Clive

That S60 camera is WAY cool Clive. F#%k, now I have to buy one of those I guess!

Mike Wynne

I have the cat S60. The thermal camera is fun to play with, and it is nicely ruggedized. I just need to find someone who has set up a newer android version.
